Stephon Castle joins CT United FC ownership group

A UConn legend and one of the NBA’s rising stars is now investing in the next generation of Connecticut soccer stars.

Former Husky Stephon Castle joined the ownership group of CT United FC, the MLS NEXT Pro team that will begin play in 2026, and a future women’s professional team, whose name is yet to be determined, which will compete in WPSL Pro in 2028.

“Playing basketball at UConn showed me the incredible talent and passion for sports here, in Connecticut,” Castle said in a release sent out Thursday. “My family and I are proud to invest in CTSG and help build elite clubs that inspire young athletes, energize fans, and create lasting pride across the state.”

Castle, who grew up in Georgia, spent just one season at UConn– winning Big East Freshman of the Year and starring on the 2023-24 team that finished 37-3 and won the national championship. He won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award last season and is currently averaging 18.2 points, 7.3 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game with the San Antonio Spurs. He had one of the best games of his NBA career so far on Wednesday night, scoring 30 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out six assists in a 132-119 win over the Lakers in the NBA Cup quarterfinals.

The 21-year-old joins a list of other entrepreneurs and businesspeople with stakes in the Connecticut Sports Group, the ownership group behind CT United FC. The club will compete in MLS NEXT Pro, which is a development league for MLS clubs.

CT United FC will begin play next season in venues throughout the state, with plans to build a new stadium on the Bridgeport waterfront.
