Mike Tyson once admitted he took repeated beatings before becoming heavyweight champion. Now, at 59, Tyson believes his next opponent could be the one getting knocked out.

Tyson has long been willing to puncture his own legend. He has repeatedly framed failure as part of the price of becoming “Iron Mike,” and this week that same blunt honesty returned—only this time it came with a warning aimed across the ring.

Speaking ahead of his next bout, Tyson predicted a dramatic finish.

“Floyd wanted to fight me. It looks like he’s going to get knocked out,” Tyson recently told Hard Rock.

From hard lessons to a calmer approach

The remarks land differently after Tyson’s November 2024 loss to Jake Paul, a result that was officially recorded on his professional ledger. In the buildup to that fight, Tyson also described a serious ulcer flare-up, saying he “lost half my blood” and “almost died.”

Now, Tyson says he feels better than he has in some time and believes he learned from the experience.

“I feel good right now. This is the best I’ve felt,” Tyson said. “I can’t wait to start getting in the ring. I learned [a lot] from my last fight.”

Tyson’s biggest takeaway was that he may have emptied too much in preparation.

“I left a lot of my fight in the gym. I worked too hard. I was too intense. I was too extreme. I need to relax more. That’s what I always believe. I need to relax more,” he said.

Confidence without personal heat

Tyson insists the goal now is not reinvention but refinement—dialing back the extremes while keeping the edge that fueled his rise.

“I’m getting more and more confident, and I believe I’ll be better in the next fight coming up,” Tyson said.

Despite the long history of barbs between them, Tyson downplayed the idea that facing Floyd Mayweather is personal.

“I don’t know, I think I got a pretty decent relationship with him,” Tyson said. “I don’t hate him. I don’t have any harsh feelings.”

Respect for Mayweather, no retreat from the claim

Tyson’s tone toward Mayweather has softened since past comments during debates over boxing greatness. With the two now set to share the ring, Tyson credited Mayweather’s body of work while maintaining his own belief about what happens next.

“Well, he’s big time, there’s no doubt about it,” Tyson said. “He definitely reigns with the greats, there’s no doubt. He put in his work.”

For Tyson, the matchup is less about re-litigating legacy and more about showing he can still deliver a dangerous performance—this time with a calmer mind and a clearer read on himself.

Taken together, Tyson’s words reflect a fighter shaped by setbacks who still believes the danger remains.
