Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi are now on course to fight for the vacant WBA lightweight title after months of confusion surrounding Gervonta Davis’ championship status finally came to an end.
The WBA has finally stripped Davis after once again placing him into Champion in Recess status. The organization then ordered Schofield and Bahdi to fight for the vacant belt, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the championship.
Davis was initially placed into Champion in Recess status in January before being reinstated as champion and ordered to defend against Schofield.
That process has now been abandoned, leaving the division’s number one and number two contenders with the chance to settle the championship in the ring.
Floyd Schofield vs Lucas Bahdi for WBA Title
Schofield and Bahdi must now reach an agreement before the fight heads toward a potential purse bid.
“Kid Austin” has already made it clear he wants the process to move quickly.
“Lucas Bahdi and Most Valuable Promotions only have a week left to reach an agreement or on to the purse bid,” Schofield posted on social media.
Bahdi’s manager and former boxer Phil Lo Greco says his fighter has already waited long enough for his opportunity.
“Lucas has been patiently waiting for this fight for over six months,” Lo Greco told World Boxing News exclusively.
“This is a great fight, and we have a lot of respect for Schofield. He’s a strong, talented fighter. Lucas is looking forward to the challenge and will be in the best shape of his life when he steps into the ring.
“He’s excited to finally get this opportunity and can’t wait to put on a great performance for the fans.”
Working on Schofield vs Bahdi
Lo Greco believes he and adviser David Itskowitch have done everything possible to secure Bahdi’s title opportunity.
“David Itskowitch and I did our part as manager and adviser to get Lucas to this stage,” Lo Greco said.
“The WBA ordered the fight. Now it’s on the promoters’ hands to make it happen. They are currently working on it.”
After twice losing control of the lightweight title situation this year through the WBA’s Champion in Recess decisions, Davis is no longer part of the immediate championship picture.
Schofield and Bahdi now have the opportunity to settle the vacant WBA lightweight title, provided both camps can reach an agreement before purse bids become necessary.
