Trevor Berbick will forever be remembered as the heavyweight champion Mike Tyson destroyed to become the youngest world heavyweight champion in history. Twenty years later, the former WBC ruler’s own life ended in shocking tragedy.
On November 22, 1986, a 20-year-old Tyson ripped the WBC title from Berbick with a devastating second-round stoppage that launched one of the most feared heavyweight reigns boxing has ever seen.
The finish remains one of heavyweight boxing’s most unforgettable images. Berbick staggered across the ring on unsteady legs as he desperately tried to beat the count before the referee waved the fight off.

Berbick’s career was about far more than one famous defeat.
The Jamaican represented his country at the 1976 Olympic Games before rising through the heavyweight ranks to earn a world title shot.
In 1981, Berbick defeated Muhammad Ali in what proved to be the final fight of “The Greatest’s” legendary career.
Five years later, he upset Pinklon Thomas to win the WBC heavyweight championship before making the first defense of his title against Tyson.
The rest is heavyweight history.
Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion the sport has ever seen, a record that still stands almost 40 years later.
Tragic End
Away from the ring, Berbick’s story took a heartbreaking turn.
On October 28, 2006, the 52-year-old was found dead in the courtyard of a church in Norwich, Portland, Jamaica, after being struck in the head with a heavy metal pipe.
Police linked the killing to a long-running family land dispute.
Berbick’s nephew, Harold Berbick, was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, while Kenton Gordon was convicted of manslaughter and jailed for 14 years.
The tragedy brought a devastating end to the life of a man whose career was forever linked to two of heavyweight boxing’s greatest names.
Berbick defeated Muhammad Ali in the final fight of the former champion’s career before becoming the man Tyson beat to launch one of the greatest heavyweight reigns of all time.
His place in heavyweight history was already secure. Sadly, his life ended in circumstances that nobody could have imagined on the night he lost his world title to Tyson.
