Ranking college football’s top five head coach-GM pairings

For nearly the entire history of college football, the head coach was seen as the face of the program, and while that is still true today, general managers are now directly involved in the on-field success. General managers handle multiple roles, making decisions on NIL market valuations, roster construction and long-term plans for team success.

Here are the top head coach-GM pairings, ranked in inverse order:

5.
Oklahoma Sooners | HC Brent Venables and GM Jim Nagy

Venables is a schemer. He may be the head coach, but he’s never been a CEO type. After taking over defensive play-calling duties in 2025, the demands of game planning and staff delegation made Oklahoma’s decision to hire Nagy the logical move.

The Sooners endured a tough transition after joining the SEC, finishing 6-7 overall and 2-6 in conference play their first season. Since the two were paired, the Sooners bounced back with an 11-3 record in 2025 and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. With a top 15 overall class through high school recruiting and the transfer portal (per 247Sports), there’s clear momentum heading into 2026.

4. Oregon Ducks
| HC Dan Lanning and GM Marshall Malchow

Lanning hired Malchow after working together with him at Georgia. The Ducks are 48-8 under Lanning and won the Big Ten Championship in 2024. Oregon returned to the College Football Playoff and finished 13-2 in 2025. The pairing has made Oregon one of the most consistent programs in the sport.

Oregon signed the No. 7 overall class in the 2026 high school and transfer portal cycle, according to 247Sports. The Ducks retained QB Dante Moore and WR Evan Stewart on offense and returned a strong foundation on the defensive line. Together, the two enter 2026 with the roster and alignment internally to contend for the national championship again.

3. Miami Hurricanes
| HC Mario Cristobal and GM Dennis Smith

Cristobal and Smith worked together at Florida International from 2007-2012. Cristobal took over a Miami program that was average. After two rebuilding seasons, Smith helped land the No. 4 overall class in the 2024 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports. Since then, the Hurricanes are 23-6 and made it to the national championship game this past season.

Miami signed the No. 4 portal class in the 2026 cycle, according to 247Sports. They return key pieces on the offensive line, which should make them the early favorite to win the ACC and make the playoff in 2026.

2. Texas Longhorns
| HC Steve Sarkisian and GM Brandon Harris

Sarkisian promoted Harris to general manager in February 2024, placing him in charge of recruiting operations and player negotiations. Since then, Texas has landed the No. 1 and No. 3 overall rankings in the past two cycles, according to 247Sports.

In their time together, Texas is 23-6 overall with an appearance in the College Football Playoff. With QB Arch Manning returning and the additions of WR Cam Coleman and RB Hollywood Smothers, the Longhorns are poised to make a title run in 2026.

Day and Pantoni have been working together as a head coach-GM pairing for nearly seven years. In that time, Ohio State is 75-10, produced 11 All-Americans and won a national championship in 2024.

As one of the most stable programs in college football, the Buckeyes have landed a top-five recruiting class every cycle since 2020, finishing second in the overall ranking in the 2026 cycle, per 247Sports. With QB Julian Sayin, RB Bo Jackson and WR Jeremiah Smith returning, the Buckeyes will be favored to compete for a championship in 2026.

Blending on-field strategy with front-office leadership, these five pairings are redefining how college football programs create excellence in the evolving world of the game.
