The Cardinals beat the Rays 6-5 in a game that went ten innings. The Rays’ offense showed fight, scoring four in the ninth to tie after being shut out for the first eight innings.
Joe Boyle gave up two runs early on, but once he settled in, he was fantastic, retiring 15 straight hitters.
But the Rays didn’t get their first hit until a Junior Caminero single in the seventh.
Tampa Bay would go on to give up two more runs in the eighth, as Cole Sulser served up an RBI double to Ivan Herrera, and a sacrifice fly from Alec Burleson would be the proverbial dagger.
Chandler Simpson was the bright spot for the offense, collecting two of the Rays’ four hits and driving in the only run in the ninth.
The “Flappy Boys” would score three more in the ninth to tie things at four.
Carson Williams drove in a pair with a single, then scored from first base on a Nick Fortes single with two outs in the ninth, never breaking stride when being waved home by third base coach Brady Williams.
In the 10th, Yandy Diaz wasted no time and drove in Ben Williamson on the first pitch with a patented opposite-field single.
In the bottom half, however, rookie JJ Wetherholt walked off the Rays on a two-RBI single.
The Rays wrap up in the gateway to the West on Sunday, with Steven Matz and Dustin May as the probable starters. Game time is at 2:15 PM EST from Busch Stadium.
