The UConn men and women have created countless memories through the madness of March and onto the championships won in April. Each day between now and the men’s and women’s Final Fours next month, The Courant will look back through our archives and highlight a memorable men’s and/or women’s game that occurred on that date. Today:
Men
2014: UConn 60, Kentucky 54
With all due respect to other Huskies title teams, this one was the most unexpected of all. A No. 7 seed in the tourney, UConn knocked off St. Joe’s, Villanova, Iowa State, Michigan State, top-seeded Florida and 8th-seeded Kentucky to claim an unbelievable fourth national title. Shabazz Napier led all scorers with 22 in the final, while Ryan Boatright added 14. Kevin Ollie became the second head coach to win a national title with the UConn men.
Women
UConn 63, Notre Dame 53
This was the third of four straight titles the Huskies women won in the Breanna Stewart era. Stewie scored 8 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in this one, while Moriah Jefferson and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each had 15. Geno Auriemma tied John Wooden with his 10th national title.
Also on this date: UConn women defeat Louisville, 76-54, to take home the title in 2009.
