ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Everyone, including the extant Michigan football coaching staff left behind while the Wolverines were searching for a new head coach, wondered what would become of some of the top signees.

The Wolverines signed their new class on a December Wednesday, only for head coach Sherrone Moore to be ousted a week later. Suddenly, programs across college football were salivating at the idea that some of the top players that the previous staff had signed were ripe for the taking.

And no one was more coveted than former five-star running back Savion Hiter.

Hiter was listed as the top running back in the country in the 2026 recruiting cycle. However, he decided to stay in the class, noting the relationship with running backs coach Tony Alford, as well as the program itself. as the primary reasons.

“Michigan’s gonna be Michigan. I mean, the block M is always gonna be there,” Hiter said. “And T.A. (Tony Alford), he’s a great dude. Known him since he was at the team down south.”

Of course, there was a momentary hesitation when Moore was fired, but even with Hiter’s initial wait-and-see approach, he never really felt like he was going to back off of his commitment.

“Yeah, I did, but I already knew it was gonna be good,” Hiter said. “Cuz, I mean, you got that block M on you, so you gotta represent that very well.”

When it came to being recruited by the program, again, following Moore’s departure, Hiter said, even with some momentary consternation, there was nothing that really needed to be said once he thought things through. And that comes from his love of his newfound school.

“No, not really,” Hiter said. “I love Michigan, so that’s not gonna change.”

In the spring game on Saturday, Hiter’s first public appearance in a Michigan uniform, he had 10 carries for 44 yards, leading all rushers on the blue team, and coming behind only quarterback Tommy Carr, who had 51 yards on scrambles for the maize team.
