UConn guard Aidan Mahaney announced he will be entering the transfer portal on Tuesday, according to On3.com.
Making a difficult adjustment to Dan Hurley and the UConn program after spending his first two college seasons close to home at St. Mary’s, Mahaney finished his lone year in Storrs averaging 4.5 points and 1.3 assists per game. The Lafayette, California, native began the season as the Huskies’ starting point guard but was moved to an off-ball role off the bench after the first game of UConn’s winless Maui Invitational appearance.
The junior played in 34 games, scoring in double figures six times. He provided productive minutes in March, helping to give hobbled starter Hassan Diarra various stretches of rest during the Big East and NCAA Tournaments.
“There’s just been a lot going on with me, so I credit Coach (Dan) Hurley with keeping me on the straight and narrow. I just want to be myself. I’m not trying to be like anyone else, just trying to be what the team needs,” Mahaney said after he scored seven points in 16 minutes off the bench against Villanova in the Big East quarterfinal.
“He’s probably the guy on the team I interact with, talk to the most,” Hurley said after that game. “Because I went through exactly the type of year (in 1992-93 at Seton Hall) that he just went through, when you have the external noise from fans our program that are disappointed.”
While the one-year Husky searches for a better fit, Hurley and his staff will be recruiting to add a point guard with experience out of the transfer portal as Diarra’s eligibility expires. The program reportedly hosted former Georgia point guard Silas Demary Jr. for a visit on Tuesday. Ahmad Nowell, the freshman who found himself behind Mahaney in the rotation at season’s end, also decided to enter the portal along with classmate Isaiah Abraham and sophomore center Youssouf Singare. Freshman Liam McNeeley announced his decision to declare for the NBA Draft on Tuesday.
There are a pair of talented guards who make up UConn’s incoming freshman class in Braylon Mullins and Darius Adams, in addition to Australian forward Jacob Furphy and center Eric Reibe. Mullins, Adams and Reibe will each participate in Tuesday’s McDonald’s All America Game.
