Donovan Mitchell and his Cleveland Cavaliers are at a crossroads. They’ll need to overcome what’s now a 1-0 deficit and fell a resilient Detroit Pistons outfit to reach their first Eastern Conference Finals under the Louisville product’s administration. If the Deion Sanders-ism holds true, maybe some new gear will be just what they need for their #1 option, as Donovan Mitchell debuted his adidas D.O.N. Issue #8 last night at Little Caesar’s Arena.
Our first look at the silhouette came draped in the green/orange “Panama” style that’s been a hallmark of Mitchell’s recent efforts. Yet the Spider-Man aesthetic has been a frequent theme as well, with adidas availing itself of the arachnid concept from Issue #1. Here, that manifests in a red/blue gradient across the new fabric mesh uppers, where a curvilinear grid marks the central design cue for this next step.
Evolution, rather than out-and-out innovation, has been the prompt for adidas Basketball in recent years, something extremely visible with teammate (both brand and literal) James Harden’s line has demonstrated in the steps from Vol. 9 to Vol. 10. In many ways, the same holds true for the First-Team All-NBAer, maintaining the stubbed collar, inner bootie split, and a large scale shank sitting in the middle of the design.
Additionally, a sectioned sole design with webbed multi-directional traction remains in place; assumedly, Lightstrike cushioning does as well. However, this does mark a divergence from the zip-up tech that the #7 stepped into, returning to a more traditional lace-up closure last seen on the #6.
No concrete info on when we’ll see a retail release for the adidas D.O.N. Issue #8 has surfaced just yet, but the last chapter is again informative. The #7 first appeared during the postseason before landing on shelves come July.
