Manny Pacquiao’s side tried to push Floyd Mayweather into a deadline. Unfortunately for the Pac-Man narrative, Mayweather ignored it completely and then returned weeks later sounding like the man controlling everything.
Mayweather’s appearance at a press conference in Las Vegas this week is the biggest takeaway from the latest Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 developments as the proposed rematch moves closer to reality.
Pacquiao Rollout
Manny Pacquiao Promotions CEO Jas Mathur rolled out the fight with enormous ambition from the beginning. The rematch was presented as a global spectacle tied to Netflix, Sphere in Las Vegas, and a fully sanctioned professional bout rather than another exhibition-era event.
“This is far more than just a rematch, this event is one of the largest global sporting spectacles of the 21st century,” Mathur told World Boxing News when outlining the original plan.
Mathur also described himself as being in a unique position to help bring both camps together after working closely with both fighters.
A deadline of April 14 was later issued to Mayweather to finalize terms.
Nothing changed.
Mayweather stayed silent while the rollout gathered momentum around him. The venue details, Netflix discussions, and timeline all came from Pacquiao’s camp. Floyd never matched that version of the fight in the same terms.
Sphere Collapse
Then the first major piece started falling apart.
Sphere, which had been sold as the centerpiece of the entire event, disappeared from the equation after the Eagles took the September 18 and 19 dates in Las Vegas.
At the same time, David Benavidez emerged as a major obstacle on Mexican Independence weekend, leaving Mayweather potentially looking toward September 26 instead.
Reports now point toward MGM Grand a week later than expected instead, a far more familiar setting for Mayweather after Pacquiao’s side originally pushed Sphere as the centerpiece of the event.
The first fight took place at MGM Grand, and the move only adds to the feeling that the rematch is slowly drifting back toward Floyd’s terms.
Floyd Mayweather
Only after those setbacks did Mayweather suddenly step back into the conversation.
Speaking during promotion for his June exhibition against Mike Zambidis in Greece, Floyd said he expected the Pacquiao fight to be finalized within 48 hours. It was his clearest indication yet that the rematch was moving forward, and it didn’t come from Pacquiao.
Pacquiao’s camp tried to launch the rematch publicly before Floyd had fully ratified it himself. Mayweather simply waited while the pressure, deadlines, and venue plans played out around him.
Now, after the original rollout has already lost pieces of the blueprint in public, Floyd has re-emerged sounding like the central voice again.
Mayweather has spent his entire career dictating terms.
Even now, after having terms laid out around him and public pressure around the whole process, the rematch still appears to move on Floyd Mayweather’s clock.
