Tuesday, June 02, 2026: Ireland Men’s international hockey player Tim Cross has announced his retirement from international hockey, bringing to a close his Ireland international career after 79 senior appearances in green.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Cross began his international hockey journey representing Australia at senior international level in 2015 before relocating to Europe to continue his hockey career. He competed with Tilburg in the Hoofdklasse, the Netherlands’ top-flight domestic league, gaining experience in one of the strongest hockey competitions in the world.

In 2019, Cross committed his international future to Ireland. Following the mandatory stand-down period required to switch international allegiance, he made his senior debut for Ireland in July 2019 during a two-match series against Scotland in Glasgow.

Having declared for Ireland, Cross traded the Netherlands for Belfast, where he represented Annadale Hockey Club while establishing himself within the Irish Senior setup.

Over the years that followed, Cross became a cornerstone of Head Coach Mark Tumilty’s squad. Renowned for his consistency, professionalism and leadership, he established himself as one of the team’s most dependable performers and a respected figure within the group.

In 2022, Cross played in all five matches as Ireland secured an historic silver medal at the FIH Hockey Nations Cup, helping the team earn a first-ever promotion to the FIH Hockey Pro League.

Cross also featured prominently across Ireland’s European campaigns, representing the team at the 2019 EuroHockey Championships and helping Ireland secure bronze and silver medals in two EuroHockey Championship II tournaments. Those performances helped secure qualification for the 2027 EuroHockey Championships, marking Ireland’s return to Europe’s topflight for the first time in eight years.

Among the defining moments of his international career was Ireland’s successful qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Cross featured in all five qualification matches as Ireland secured their place at the Games before going on to play in all five Olympic fixtures in Paris, helping Ireland compete on the sport’s biggest stage.

Across 79 senior international appearances, Cross represented Ireland with distinction, making a significant contribution both on and off the field and helping drive the continued progress of the men’s national programme.

Following the announcement, Tim Cross said:

“After much reflection, I have made the decision to retire from international hockey with Ireland. It is not an easy decision to step away from something that has been such a defining part of my life for so many years, but I do so with immense pride in what we have achieved together and deep gratitude for everyone who has been part of the journey.

When I look back, I think of a path that has taken me from Melbourne, where I first picked up a stick, to a life and career that brought me to Europe and, ultimately, to representing Ireland. Pulling on the green jersey for the first time in 2019 is a moment I will never forget. From that point on, I felt incredibly privileged to represent Ireland on some of hockey’s biggest stages.

Ireland Men’s Head Coach Mark Tumilty said:

“It has been a pleasure working with Tim both on and off the pitch for the last seven years. Tim brought commitment, energy and undeniable talent to our team. He was a highly respected member of the squad and the Senior Men’s programme has been better for his contribution. We wish him every success and happiness in his next chapter.”

On behalf of everyone at Hockey Ireland, we extend our sincere thanks to Tim for his outstanding commitment, professionalism and contribution to Irish hockey. His impact on the national programme over the past seven years has been immense, and we wish him every success and happiness in the next chapter of his career and life.

Cross continues to represent Hampstead & Westminster in England’s Premier Division while completing a Masters in Sport & Exercise Nutrition and working as a Physical Education teacher in London.
