Kimi Antonelli delivered a fifth straight Grand Prix win around the streets of Monte Carlo to extend his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to a mighty 66 points.
The Mercedes man was on top form throughout the weekend, grabbing pole on Saturday under huge pressure from a tightly bunched field, before handling everything the chaotic race threw at him in his stride.
But while there was joy on one side of the Mercedes garage, there was a thoroughly different mood in George Russell’s camp after a late drive through penalty ended his quest for a podium and dropped him outside the points.
Tom Clarkson caught up with F1 TV’s Laura Winter and Lawrence Barretto in the paddock to discuss all the talking points after a very busy Monaco Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc’s home race ended in the barriers after a tricky afternoon battling inconsistent braking yet again, but there were positives for Ferrari in the form of Lewis Hamilton, who finished on the podium yet again.
Isack Hadjar was also on the rostrum after a tough afternoon fighting with power issues. He managed to just about bring his car home to take advantage of Pierre Gasly’s penalties and jump up into P3.
Speaking of Gasly, he was one of a number of drivers to suffer penalties in the Principality, something the team delve into. The Frenchman wound up dropping from third to seventh and cut a disconsolate figure afterwards.
He wasn’t the only frustrated driver on Sunday night though, with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris both forced to retire from the race with reliability gremlins.
But while some drivers headed home for an early bath, others were likely celebrating until the wee hours. Racing Bulls managed to bag a double score courtesy of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, while Fernando Alonso was promoted to P10 to score Aston Martin’s first point of the season thanks to a post-race penalty for Sergio Perez.
