What kind of NFL future does Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby have?

In one of the most controversial rulings in recent college football history, a Texas judge recently granted a preliminary injunction to Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby. That will now allow him to play this season, despite admitting to gambling on his own team.

Judge Ken Curry wrote, “Applicant has demonstrated he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if the court does not grant this temporary injunction.”

That was so he could be on a team this fall. However, Sorsby would have joined the NFL’s supplemental draft and likely found a home there had he not won in court. Even then, Sorsby will be looking to the NFL following the 2026 college season. So, it’s worth asking the question, what type of NFL future does he have?

Brendan Sorsby as an NFL prospect

Now 22 years old, Sorsby is on his third college team and coming off his best college season. Playing for Cincinnati, he threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns.

If Sorsby had been a first-round pick this past season, he would have already gone pro. However, NIL makes it so potential later-round picks can stay in college longer, earning money. That’s what happened in this case, as he earned a major deal to stay in college and transfer to Texas Tech.

What’s more interesting is how he fits into next year’s prospects. After all, 2027 is regarded as a stacked class, with Arch Manning and Dante Moore being the two headliners. However, players like Julian Sayin, CJ Carr, CJ Bailey, Trinidad Chambliss, Jayden Maiava and LaNorris Sellers are all probably involved in the class, too. That’s before considering possible risers who prove themselves in this next college football season.

In other words, it’s an incredibly crowded class. Still, there’s plenty to like about Sorsby. He has a good arm and is athletic. He also has plenty of experience. However, he’s widely regarded as a low-ceiling and high-floor prospect. Erratic ball placement, in particular, is an issue scouts have noticed.

What’s unclear is how NFL teams are going to view Sorsby in light of the gambling scandal. Some teams likely won’t consider him over the controversy, which throws a wrench into Sorsby’s future as a prospect.

On top of that, Sorsby faces possible punishment from the NFL. It’s not unheard of that the NFL punishes college players and coaches jumping to the league for past infractions. It happened to Jim Tressel.

A more direct example might be New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. He had a gambling issue at LSU that didn’t come out until he was in the NFL. Eventually, charges would be dropped against Boutte, but the NFL held the option to fine or suspend him for the incident. That was in the summer of 2024 when charges were dropped, and the NFL didn’t end up punishing him.

Brendan Sorsby could be at his peak earnings

The NIL deal that landed Sorsby at Texas Tech is reportedly worth around $5 million this year. That came from a quarterback transfer market that was weaker than normal, driving up the price. It’s an NIL deal that could potentially represent the maximum earnings that Sorsby will have in his career.

NFL rookie deals are relatively fixed. The 2026 pay scale for rookies sets any player selected after No. 12 overall at less than $5 million for their first season. By the No. 33 overall pick, the scale doesn’t pass $5 million, even in Year 4. Second NFL contracts aren’t promised, so this could be Sorsby’s maximum annual earnings.
