Monday, June 22: Hockey Ireland are delighted to announce the appointment of Patrick Tshutshani as the new Ireland U21 Men’s Head Coach and IRL Senior Men’s Support Coach.
Tshutshani brings more than 15 years of international high-performance coaching experience to Hockey Ireland, having held coaching and performance roles across South Africa, Hong Kong, India, Canada and, now, Ireland.
Most recently, Tshutshani served as Head Coach of the Canadian Men’s National Team, leading the programme through major international competitions including the Pan American Games, FIH Olympic Qualifiers, FIH Nations Cup and Pan Am Cup. Prior to his role with Canada, he was Analytical Coach with the Indian Women’s National Team, where he contributed to medal-winning performances in the FIH Pro League, Asia Cup and the Commonwealth Games, including India’s bronze medal success at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Before taking charge of the Canadian Men’s National Team, Tshutshani built an impressive international coaching portfolio across South Africa, Hong Kong and Canada, working with both senior and junior national programmes. During this time, he led Canada’s Junior Women’s National Team to a historic first Junior Pan American Cup gold medal, coached South Africa at the FIH Junior World Cup, and played key roles in numerous Olympic qualification campaigns, World Cups, Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, FIH Pro League competitions and continental championships.
Across these high-performance environments, Tshutshani has developed significant expertise in athlete development, performance analysis, tactical planning, and establishing sustainable high-performance cultures.
A graduate in Sport Psychology and Biokinetics from the University of Johannesburg, Tshutshani is passionate about creating environments where athletes can excel both on and off the pitch.
Speaking about his appointment, Tshutshani said:
“I am excited to join Hockey Ireland and contribute to an ambitious high-performance environment with strong foundations and real potential. I look forward to working with the U21 and Senior Men’s programmes to help develop the next generation of Irish players, strengthen alignment across the pathway, and support athletes and staff in achieving sustained success on the international stage.”
Tshutshani has already joined the Ireland Under-21 Men’s programme, taking charge of the side during this weekend’s series against Scotland at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. The Irish side recorded two victories over the visitors, first securing a 4-3 win before following it up with a 2-1 success.
Attention will now turn to the team’s upcoming series against France in Beauvais at the beginning of July, before Tshutshani leads the squad into the EuroHockey U21 Championship II in Poznan, Poland, at the end of July.
The appointment represents another significant addition to Hockey Ireland’s high-performance programme as preparations continue for a busy international summer across both junior and senior pathways.
