Michigan football had a verbose former alum reacting to Dusty May’s exit. May leaves Michigan basketball in stunning fashion by accepting the Dallas Mavericks head coaching job Monday. But an ex-Wolverines quarterback put athletic director Warde Manuel on blast.
Wilton Speight fired off criticism toward Manuel as May leaves the defending national champions.
“Anyone close enough to the program knew Dusty was out if they kept Warde. Mind blowing how this is how it unfolded. What a disaster,” Speight said on an Instagram post from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, who’s a Michigan alum himself.
The 31-year-old Speight played from 2015 to 2017 in Ann Arbor during a time Jim Harbaugh led the Wolverines. He delivered his best output in 2016: Tossing 18 touchdowns, 2,538 yards and sustaining only seven interceptions. Speight eventually transferred to UCLA for 2018 to play for then head coach Chip Kelly.
Some Wolverine fans dunked on Speight, though, for his post.
“Wilton Speight also left the program by the way. So who cares about what he thinks,” one fan posted in response.
“Speight ran away to UCLA After Shea Patterson took the QB role. Maybe consider a more reliable source instead of sour grapes,” another fan reacted.
Other fans linked Speight to one of the more infamous Michigan games of his tenure: The 14-13 loss at Iowa that ruined the Wolverines’ 9-0 start plus national title picture chances. Michigan went 1-3 the rest of the way in that 2016 campaign.
Manuel and Michigan, meanwhile, won’t launch a national search right away to replace May. Assistant Mike Boynton Jr. immediately became elevated to interim head coach with the chance to land the full-time gig.
