The Converse SHAI 001 is getting a new look for the off-season. A first look at an updated version of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s debut signature sneaker has been revealed, replacing the model’s distinctive zippered shroud with a more traditional lace-up construction. The redesign retains the SHAI 001’s sculpted silhouette while offering a more familiar aesthetic that could appeal to players who prefer a conventional fit and feel.
This variation of the SHAI 001 was debuted by the Canadian star during Team Canada training camp; photos were shared by @neighbourhoodroc and @thecanadianbasketballshow.
This non-zip version comes equipped with more playful colorway varieties in comparison to the more lux-leaning finishes of the 001 model. Two versions are shown – a multi-toned pink edition, and another bearing leopard prints on the tongue against a beige coloway and light green interior.
Sneaker News can also confirm that Gilgeous-Alexander was originally expected to debut the lace version during the 2026 NBA Finals had the Oklahoma City Thunder advanced. Instead, the Thunder’s postseason came to an end in the Western Conference Finals, delaying the shoe’s anticipated on-court introduction.
Despite Gilgeous-Alexander’s recent move from Converse to Nike Basketball, the SHAI 001 remains a Converse product. The transition may seem unusual on the surface, but because Converse operates under the Nike, Inc. umbrella, the signature model continues to move forward as planned until Nike takes over for the sequel model. The arrangement represents one of the more unique athlete-brand relationships in basketball, allowing Shai’s debut signature sneaker to co-exist alongside his new role within Nike Basketball’s signature athlete roster.
Release information for the Converse SHAI 001 Lace has not yet been announced, but stay tuned to Sneaker News for additional updates.
