The Washing Wizards have added an NBA legend to their coaching staff.
The Wizards will name Patrick Ewing as an assistant coach on Brian Keefe’s staff, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Saturday.
Ewing played 17 years in the NBA between the New York Knicks, Seattle SuperSonics and Orlando Magic. He spent 15 of his seasons with the Knicks, who selected him first overall in the 1985 NBA Draft.
The seven-foot centre was the 1985-86 Rookie of the Year, an 11-time all-star, seven-time all-NBA, and three-time all-defence during his Hall of Fame career. He was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary team in 1996 and 75th Anniversary team in 2021.
Ewing also has some coaching experience, including with the Wizards. He previously was an assistant with the Wizards (2002-03), the Rockets (2003-07), the Magic (2007-12) and the Hornets (2013-17).
The 63-year-old also served as head coach of his alma mater, Georgetown, from 2017-23. He had a 143-138 record during that span.
Ewing spent the past two seasons as an ambassador for the Knicks.
Also joining the Wizards is long-time NBA coach Steve Clifford, as a coaching advisor, Charania adds.
