Michigan guard LJ Cason plans to enter the transfer portal

Michigan guard LJ Cason plans to enter the transfer portal, he announced Monday night in an Instagram collaboration with On3.

Cason is the first Michigan player to announce he intends to leave the program after Dusty May’s departure to become the coach of the Dallas Mavericks. The Wolverines’ other 13 scholarship players previously announced their intentions to remain at Michigan under new coach Mike Boynton Jr. Also Monday, Michigan hired Brown coach Mike Martin as an assistant to run the Wolverines offense.

Because of the coaching change, Michigan players were granted a 15-day transfer portal window beginning July 15. The regular portal window normally opens right after the championship game and lasts for 15 days.

Before suffering a season-ending ACL tear against Illinois in February, Cason was in the midst of a breakout campaign. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 8.4 points, 2.4 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game while shooting 50.3 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from 3-point range. Cason underwent surgery and is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2026-27 campaign while recovering.

Michigan went on to win the national championship, beating UConn 69-63 in the championship game. In mid-June, May left the school for the NBA as he accepted the coach position with the Mavericks.
