The Dallas Mavericks have made another offseason roster move, waiving two-way forward Tyler Smith and signing former Orlando Magic wing Jett Howard to a two-way contract, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The transaction continues Dallas’ push to reshape its young roster around 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.

The Dallas Mavericks are waiving two-way forward Tyler Smith, league sources told @hoopshype. Smith averaged 4.7 points in 13.8 minutes per game during 12 games played for Dallas last season. Smith was originally the 33rd pick of the 2024 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Smith appeared in 12 games for the Mavericks during the 2025-26 season after joining the organization on a two-way deal. The 21-year-old averaged 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game while shooting 42.0% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. Originally selected 33rd overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2024 NBA Draft, Smith was unable to carve out a consistent role in Dallas’ frontcourt.

Howard arrives with considerably more NBA experience after spending his first three professional seasons with the Orlando Magic. The 22-year-old former first-round pick appeared in 133 career games, averaging 4.5 points in 11.0 minutes while shooting 39.2% from the field and 32.6% from beyond the arc.

His most productive campaign came in 2025-26, when he played 55 games and posted career highs across the board. Howard averaged 5.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 12.6 minutes per contest while shooting 41.8% from the floor, 37.2% from three-point range and an outstanding 94.9% from the free-throw line. His improved perimeter shooting gives Dallas another developmental wing capable of spacing the floor.

Howard joins a Mavericks team that finished 26-56 last season, missing the playoffs after transitioning into a full rebuild centered around Flagg. The No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft immediately became the franchise cornerstone, averaging 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals over 70 games on his way to Rookie of the Year honors.

Dallas has been one of the NBA’s busiest teams this offseason. The organization recently acquired 2024 No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher from the Atlanta Hawks, added Santi Aldama and Marcus Sasser in a multi-team trade, and selected Morez Johnson Jr. with the ninth overall pick and Sergio De Larrea at No. 25 in the 2026 NBA Draft.

The addition of Howard also strengthens the club’s wing depth alongside Flagg, Risacher, Naji Marshall, Max Christie, Tarik Biberovic and Klay Thompson, whose name has surfaced in trade speculation during the offseason.
