Tim Tszyu revived his career with a victory over Errol Spence Jr., but his next move at middleweight may determine how he’s remembered at 160. Every meaningful option points in a different direction, leaving Tszyu to choose between collecting another world title or testing himself against the division’s strongest opposition.
If a second divisional title is the objective, WBO titleholder Denzel Bentley looks like the logical target. Bentley deserves credit for winning his last four fights, yet those victories came against Endry Saavedra, Brad Pauls, Derrick Osaze, and Danny Dignum. None possess Tszyu’s accomplishments or experience at the highest level. Bentley also showed his toughness in a unanimous decision loss to Janibek Alimkhanuly, pushing the former champion through 12 hard rounds. That doesn’t make Bentley an easy fight, but stylistically he appears to be Tszyu’s most favorable championship opportunity.
Carlos Adames presents a different challenge. The WBC champion brings relentless pressure, proven durability, and the ability to punish mistakes. A victory over Adames would carry considerably more prestige because few observers would question where Tszyu belongs among the division’s elite afterward.
The biggest gamble of all, however, isn’t a title fight. It’s unbeaten Cuban contender Yoenli Hernandez. Hernandez may not own a world belt, but many view him as one of boxing’s brightest young talents. Defeating him would answer more questions than winning any title currently available at 160.
That opportunity may never be better than it is today. Tszyu is already 31, while Hernandez continues moving toward his physical prime. Waiting another two or three years only tilts the odds further in Hernandez’s favor as the Cuban gains experience. If Tszyu believes he has the tools to beat Hernandez, now is the time to find out.
Only Tszyu knows what matters most at this stage of his career. Another world title is within reach if he chooses the Bentley route. Adames would provide greater prestige, but Hernandez is the fight that would answer every remaining question about Tszyu’s place in the division.
