Derek Fisher pushed back against criticism of LeBron James’ career decisions, comparing the future Hall of Famer’s impact on franchises to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s ability to bring championships wherever he played.
Speaking with Cody Decker of 97.1 The Fan LA, Fisher argued that labeling James a “ring chaser” ignores the difference between joining contenders and being the player who changes a team’s championship outlook.
“I don’t like, I don’t know why we so strongly just go so hard in the paint towards the negative,” Fisher said, via HoopsHype. “Everybody is ring chasing.”
Fisher added that elite players are often viewed differently because of their ability to transform organizations. “You’re not ring chasing when you’re the guy that creates the rings,” he said.
The former Los Angeles Lakers guard pointed to Abdul-Jabbar as an example of a superstar whose presence elevated every team he joined. Abdul-Jabbar won six NBA championships during his career, earning titles with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers after being traded to Los Angeles in 1975.
“Go back in NBA sports history. It’s not about where the guy is on the team. It’s about where he is, not the city or the team,” Fisher said. “Lew Alcindor, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He didn’t chase rings. Where he went, the rings followed.”
James’ career has included championships with three different franchises. He won two titles with the Miami Heat, one with the Cleveland Cavaliers and one with the Lakers, becoming the only player in NBA history to win Finals MVP with three teams.
The 2025-26 season added another chapter to James’ longevity. At age 41, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games while shooting 51.5% from the field. The Lakers finished 53-29 and won the Pacific Division before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.
James entered the 2026 offseason after leaving the Lakers following eight seasons with the franchise. His decision to continue his career elsewhere generated significant discussion around whether another championship move would be viewed as adding to his legacy or as pursuing another title opportunity.
Fisher’s comments come after James joined the Philadelphia 76ers, adding another chapter to his career-long discussion about pursuing championships. The 41-year-old chose Philadelphia after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers, joining a roster built around Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown.
Philadelphia’s 2025-26 roster featured Maxey averaging 28.3 points and 6.6 assists over 70 games, while Embiid averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 38 appearances. The team’s offseason moves were aimed at creating a stronger championship foundation around its star core.
