After acquiring the all-time great in free agency, the 76ers reportedly are planning to have James play point guard, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The 41-year-old four-time MVP and champion has always been versatile, frequently shifting between positions throughout his NBA-record 23-season career.
However he’s more frequently played a “point-forward” role, taking on both the responsibilities of a larger frontcourt player and a table-setting guard.
James has played point guard in spurts, but only took on the role full-time in one season, 2019-20, when he led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA championship and led the league with 10.2 assists per game.
Tyrese Maxey, who has started at point guard for Philadelphia for the past five seasons, is coming off a season where he averaged 28.3 points and made the third-team All-NBA.
However, Maxey is also regarded as one of the premier off-ball scorers in the league, both due to his three-point shooting and cutting proficiency, and could potentially start alongside James at the shooting guard position.
