Utah OL Reveals Intense New Strength Program Led to Significant Physical Gains

Expectations are already high for Utah entering the 2026 season, and according to veteran offensive lineman Alex Harrison, one of the biggest reasons could be what happened behind the scenes this offseason.

Harrison offered a glowing review of the Utes’ revamped strength and conditioning program under new head coach Morgan Scalley, describing it as one of the most significant changes he has experienced during his time in Salt Lake City.

“It was the most difficult summer workout I’ve ever been through but I’ve never felt better physically,” Harrison said, according to Steve Bartle of KSL Sports.

That’s a notable endorsement considering Utah’s long-standing reputation as one of the most physical programs in the Big 12 and the country. The Utes have built their identity on toughness in the trenches, and Harrison’s comments suggest the program is doubling down on that approach.

Even more eye-opening was Harrison’s claim regarding the physical development of Utah’s offensive linemen.

According to Harrison, some members of the offensive line added approximately 20 pounds of lean mass in just two to three months. If those gains translate onto the field, Utah could boast one of the conference’s most imposing front lines this fall.

The timing is especially important for a Utah team looking to continue to maintain its reputation under Scalley’s leadership following the retirement and departure of Kyle Whittingham. Success in the Big 12, and all of college football, often starts up front, and Harrison’s comments indicate that philosophy remains as strong as ever in Salt Lake City.

While offseason workout reports should always be taken with some caution, Harrison’s remarks provide an intriguing glimpse into what’s happening inside the Utah football program.

If the Utes truly emerged from the summer bigger, stronger, and in better condition than before, the rest of the Big 12 may soon find out just how impactful those changes can be once the season kicks off.

Utah opens the 2026 season on Thursday, September 3rd at home against Idaho.
