Spurs could sign a bigger talent than Savinho for £72m

After multiple years of near-misses with relegation in the Premier League, the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy have decided to get their chequebook out and spend big to improve the squad this summer.

The midfield department has seen the biggest improvement to date, as Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali have arrived in North London for a combined £185m.

Both of the aforementioned talents will undoubtedly be key members of Roberto De Zerbi’s squad next term, but the hierarchy are still on the hunt for added reinforcements throughout the senior ranks.

One other area of the squad is set to be improved by the end of the window, which could take the Lilywhites’ spending to upwards of £300m in the process.

There was once a time when Spurs had one of the most threatening duos in the Premier League, but De Zerbi unfortunately doesn’t have the likes of Heung-min Son and Harry Kane at his disposal.

However, the Italian will need to add quality to the club’s front line, with last season’s struggles highlighting the need for added reinforcements in the final third.

Richarlison ended the 2025/26 campaign as the Lilywhites’ top-goalscorer with 11 league goals, but the Brazilian’s long-term future in North London is still up for debate.

No other attacker in the senior ranks managed to net more than four goals in the Premier League, with Mathys Tel registering such a figure despite starting just 13 matches.

Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert and Dejan Kulusevski all remain sidelined with various injury concerns and their return to fitness currently remains a mystery.

Over recent weeks, Spurs have once again ramped up their interest in landing Manchester City winger Savinho after previously trying to land the attacker last summer.

The Brazilian has even stated his desire to complete a move to North London, but it remains unclear how much a deal for the 22-year-old would cost this summer.

As a result, other options are still being drawn up by the Lilywhites, which has seen Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo emerge on their shortlist over recent days.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on the deal, stating: “Cody Gakpo is a target for Tottenham. Spurs had contacts with the agency representing the player. Spurs like the player and believe he could be the right addition.

“Now it depends on the price, Liverpool are not pushing Gakpo out. They are very happy with Cody Gakpo. So the only way to change the story and to let him go Tottenham, to open doors, because so far, Liverpool never wanted to open doors.”

Other outlets have claimed that a deal for the Dutchman could total as much as £72m, but such a price tag has not deterred De Zerbi’s men in their efforts to secure his signature.

He and Savinho appear to be the club’s leading talents in forward areas, but which would be a bigger coup for the Lilywhites in their efforts to rise up the Premier League?

When comparing their respective stats and experience in the division, it’s safe to say a move for Gakpo would be the better option for De Zerbi’s men at present.

In England’s top-flight last term, the Liverpool man registered six times more goal contributions than the Brazilian – with last season deemed a quiet one given his previous standards.

The Dutchman netted 18 goals across all competitions the season prior, which demonstrates his incredible goalscoring ability – something which Spurs have desperately lacked in recent times.

Gakpo also managed to complete more of the dribbles he attempted in the Premier League last term, ultimately leading him to creating more chances per 90 for his teammates.

Such figures highlight his all-round dominance over Savinho within forward areas, which could see him provide the threat the Lilywhites have been lacking in the final third.

The Dutchman has also claimed more Premier League titles during his time in England, with such experience vital to De Zerbi’s ambitions of making the club a force to be reckoned with.

£72m may be seen as an expensive deal for Spurs this summer, but it’s one which could add the firepower which the club have craved over recent seasons.

Savinho would be an upgrade on the options currently available in North London – but if success is the aim for the manager, a deal for Gakpo over him would be a no-brainer.
