The Cincinnati Reds are coming off of a sweep of the Athletics, but now they have to hit the road to begin a week-long stint away from Great American Ball Park. Tonight they will start things off with a 3-game series against the Washington Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45pm, but there’s some questionable weather in the area early in the evening that may cause a delayed start. Stay tuned.

Chase Petty
With Hunter Greene out, and suddenly, the Reds turn to Petty to fill in today in a spot start. Petty, a former starter, made two starts for Cincinnati in May before moving to the bullpen where he’s found some success. His last outing came more than a week ago, so his arm is certainly fresh. He’s pitched multiple innings in most of his relief appearances. How many pitches he’ll throw tonight could depend on how things go when he’s on the mound, though he likely won’t be asked to throw more than a couple of innings given that he hasn’t thrown more than 32 pitches since the end of June.
The splits for Petty have been big this year. Right-handed hitters are showing off a high average and hitting for a ton of power when facing him. Left-handed hitters aren’t hitting for much average and they aren’t hitting for any power, either. Small sample size in both sets of stats, so take them for what they are – a story of what has happened but not necessarily a predictor or what will happen.

Cade Cavalli
After having a tough start to begin July where he threw just 2.1 innings in a loss to Pittsburgh, Cavalli has thrown exactly 6.0 innings in each of his last five starts while giving up two earned runs in four of them and none in the other.
The splits are big against Cavalli. Left-handed hitters have a high average against him and they show so-so power when they do get hits. Right-handed hitters hit for a lower average and show absolutely no power when facing him.

Hunter Greene to undergo elbow surgery
Bad news for Greene and the Reds as he’ll be undergoing surgery on his right elbow. The extent of the surgery at this point is unknown and won’t be known until they get in there are have a better look. We wrote a little bit more in our piece from earlier today, but there just isn’t a ton of information available beyond that.
