After a competitive battle for the Defensive Player of the Year award, and it was Evan Mobley who came out victorious.

Evan Mobley has been announced as the 2024-25 Defensive Player of the Year. It was a well-deserved recognition for the star big man amid the Cleveland Cavaliers’ outstanding season.

With Mobley on the court, the Eastern Conference powerhouse presented a top-two defensive stand (108.6), which was a key segment of the Cavs clinching 64 regular season wins and transforming into a legit title contender.

Cavaliers players campaigned Mobley to secure the DPOY, and their efforts were successful. Ty Jerome even thought that he should get the Most Improved Player as well, while Darius Garland was vocal about Mobley’s odds to win it, leading to the official announcement of the winner.

Draymond Green feels sympathy for Dyson Daniels

Evan Mobley was fully deserving to win the Defensive Player of the Year honors. Another strong candidate was Dyson Daniels.

The Atlanta Hawks youngster came up short, ranking second just behind Mobley. This does not change the fact that he had a remarkable defensive season that is now in the books.

Averaging a league-leading 3.0 steals per game, he notably broke a 51-year record that made his bid compelling as ever.

He also went on to dominate the league’s defensive statistical lines that only Michael Jordan achieved as a guard for over 30 years.

And from one great perimeter defender to another, Dyson enjoyed the endorsement of Memphis Grizzlies great Tony Allen.

Yet amid historic year, Daniels failed to get enough votes for the award. And in the perspective of third placed Draymond Green, this is simply devastating for Australian sensation.

“I’m sure Dyson Daniels was crushed. I know that feeling, your first time being in the running and you don’t come up with it,” he said on the latest episode of his The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis.

“I’ve experienced it before. If anything, I feel for Dyson Daniels because he had a great defensive year, and this is his first time going through that. This is his first time experiencing that feeling of, ‘Damn, I didn’t get it’.

“I was like, ‘I’m fine, I’m moving on, I’ve been through that before.’ “

Green offers his congratulations to Mobley

Like Daniels, Green emerged as another finalist for the Defensive Player award. But the Golden State Warriors big man had to settle for third.

In the end, Green have no ill feelings about not obtaining his second-career DPOY as he already expressed appreciation about Mobley winning it.

“No big deal to me but I will say congratulations to Evan Mobley. Incredible. I’ve been a fan of his since USC. I’ve been a fan of his USC [days],” Green further elaborated.

“And to see him continue to grow, continue to become the player that everybody thought that he’d become. … I’m happy as hell to see him get that, so shout out to him, man.”

Even though it was only Mobley who emerged as the final winner, both Daniels and Green certainly had compelling cases after notable defensive seasons of their own.
