Game Thread #140: Milwaukee Brewers (85-54) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (80-58)

The Milwaukee Brewers lost their opener against Philadelphia, but after an off day, they get back in the action with hopes of tying the series.

Josa Quintana gets the start as he looks to rebound from a bumpy outing against the Diamondbacks last week. He surrendered six runs over 3 2/3 innings, the first time he failed to go at least five innings since the middle of June. Prior to that game against Arizona, Quintana had been on a good run of form, surrendering three or fewer runs in six straight outings.

Aaron Nola takes the mound for Philadelphia in his fourth start since returning from the injured list. He’s struggled to acclimate so far, giving up 12 earned runs across 14 1/3 innings. While August proved to be a difficult month for Nola, he did work six innings in his last two starts, so the Phillies should expect him to still provide a measure of length in today’s game.

The Brewers’ lineup starts off with Brice Turang in the leadoff spot. Recently announced as the NL Player of the Month, Turang had a .343/.398/.694 slash line in August. His season OPS now sits at .798, a significant improvement from his .665 mark last season.

Joining Turang in the infield are Anthony Seigler, Joey Ortiz, and Jake Bauers. William Contreras makes the start at catcher. The outfield lines up with Isaac Collins, Blake Perkins, and Sal Frelick from left to right. Christian Yelich takes his role as designated hitter.

Before the game, the Brewers announced a pair of roster moves. RHP Shelby Miller was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow UCL sprain, as he reportedly “felt a pop” before being removed from Monday’s game. That means he’ll be out for the rest of the season after making 11 relief appearances with a 5.59 ERA over 9 2/3 innings. That move is retroactive to September 2.

Another righty was selected from the minors in his place in old friend Joel Payamps, who was designated for assignment and, after going unclaimed on waivers, outrighted to Triple-A Nashville earlier this season. After sporting an 8.35 ERA over 23 appearances (18 1/3 innings) earlier this season, Payamps has been a bit better with Nashville, as he has a 4.73 ERA and 30 strikeouts across 26 2/3 innings with the Sounds.

First pitch today is at 6:40 p.m. with the broadcast available on FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.

UPDATE: Yelich was a late scratch in the lineup, as he’s reportedly dealing with back soreness. Yes, the same back he had surgery on just last year. Hopefully, it’s just a day or two of rest for him. Instead, Jackson Chourio, who was originally left out of the lineup as he continues to work his way back to 100% from his hamstring strain, finds himself back in the lineup.
