GDT: Jorge Sosa had such an interesting career

Once upon a time, Jorge Sosa was an outfielder in the Colorado Rockies system with an electric arm. So naturally, the Rockies kept him as far away from the mound as possible. It was the Seattle Mariners who decided to transition him to a pitching role after selecting during the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. The next offseason, the Milwaukee Brewers took him in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft. However, Sosa failed to make the Brewers’ Opening Day roster and was placed on waivers, allowing the Devil Rays to claim him and give him a place on their roster.

For several years, Sosa toiled between the bullpen and starting rotation. However, entering the 2005 season, Sosa was on the outside looking in for Tampa in terms of roster construction and the recently retired Roberto Alomar opened up a hole at second base for the Devil Rays, so they sent Sosa to Atlanta for Nick Green.

Sosa thrived during the 2005 season and earned a spot in the Braves rotation and a long look in 2006 but was absolutely abysmal so the Braves and eventually the Cardinals moved on. Sosa latched on with the New York Mets in 2007 and enjoyed the best year of his career. He would put up three below replacement years following his successful 2007 campaign before venturing into international leagues, spending time in Mexico, Japan, and the Dominican Republic. He last pitched in 2016 with the Leones del Escogido where he was teammates with Rafael Devers, Yoshi Tsutsgo, and Taylor Motter.

First pitch against the Atlanta Braves is at 1:05 at CoolToday Park and the Braves will be providing tv and radio coverage.
