Historic bottom of the order performance (and umpires) prevents Dodgers sweep – Dodgers Digest

Today was the kind of frustrating game I’m more used to when playing the Angels, as the bottom of their order with help from the umpires provided a bunch of infuriating damage as the Dodgers failed to sweep in a 13-5 loss.

======

This was a maddening game, really.

After Emmet Sheehan worked around a two-out double in the 1st, he gave up a one-out single in the 2nd, which is when the disaster started. Nick Madrigal was up next and he worked a 14-pitch walk that included two overturned strike three calls and Kyle Tucker dropping a flyball in foul territory in the middle of the at-bat. Jose Siri then got a walk of his own on a 3-2 count that loaded the bases, but only after he foul tipped strike three into Dalton Rushing‘s glove that wasn’t called (not reviewable).

That was followed by Sebastian Rivero blooping a single to drive in a pair of runs to make it 2-0 Angels.

That was it for Sheehan, as Dave Roberts had a rested pen and a day off tomorrow, trying to avoid Emmet throwing too many pitches in one inning.

Edgardo Henriquez came in to get him out of that trouble, and he did that with two outs before also getting a clean 3rd.

——

Meanwhile, Jose Soriano managed to get over his control problems for one day against the Dodgers. He worked around a one-out single in the 1st, and then a pair of singles to start the 2nd as well thanks to a double play.

The Dodgers did get on the board in the 3rd, as back-to-back one-out singles from Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman cornered the runners, and Kyle Tucker technically did his job by squibbing a ball in front of the plate to score Shohei to make it 2-1 Angels.

That was all, unfortunately.

——

The 4th was given to Blake Treinen, who gave up an infield single, had a passed ball, walked a hitter, gave up a sac bunt, and then saw another bloop by Rivero fall in for two more runs to make it 4-1 before he got out of the inning.

He does it again ?

Alex Vesia then entered in the 5th and also struggled. He gave up a four-pitch walk to start, then got back-to-back strikeouts, but gave up a single to put a pair on, and then Madrigal earned a 12-pitch walk to load the bases (including a brutal missed check-swing call).

He did check, they all fucked up. https://t.co/3domj4vNc8

Due to the pitch count, Jonathan Hernandez entered and Jose Siri blooped another hit into right for two more runs before he got out of it to make it 6-1.

He continued in the 6th, working around a lead-off single.

——

For the offense, Soriano got another double play to erase a single in the 4th and worked around a lead-off walk in the 5th, but they got back in the game in the 6th.

Kyle Tucker led off with a walk, and with one-out Alex Call reached on an error, which setup Dalton Rushing to crush his eighth homer of the year to make it 6-4 just like that. It quickly got to 6-5 when Ryan Ward hit his second homer of the game to make it back-to-back.

Soriano got the last two outs of the 6th, but that was it for him.

——

Unfortunately, it didn’t matter that much, as Hernandez continued for the Dodgers in the 7th and was left in to die as he struggled.

His inning went lineout, walk, Jo Adell two-run homer, single, single, Rivero single for a run, Zach Neto three-run homer to turn 6-5 into 12-5 just like that.

This is actually hilarious.

They just said it’s the first time in the live-ball era that the bottom of the order has started better than 10-for-10, lmfao. https://t.co/obqYupeS76

Finally, Jack Dreyer entered and got the final two outs to end that suffering. He also got the first two outs of the 8th before Kyle Hurt entered for the final one. He continued in the 9th, giving up a one-out infield single and Rivero’s fifth hit of the day with a double to make it 13-5 before it ended.

— Los Angeles Angels (@Angels) June 7, 2026

I guess Dave wanted to stay away from some pen arms, but using Hurt anyway is sorta confusing and counterproductive.

——

The Angels pen started in the 7th, now protecting a huge lead, and worked around a couple of singles. They got around a double and walk in the 8th, and the side struck out in the 9th.

At least this was funny.

======

42-24, oh well.

The Dodgers have the day off tomorrow as they travel to Pittsburgh for a three-game series against the Pirates, which starts at 12:40 PM HT/3:40 PM PT/6:40 PM ET with Eric Lauer facing Paul Skenes … even matchup.
