LA comes from ahead to lose; split series in Arizona – Dodgers Digest

In a game that looked in control for the Dodgers through seven innings, they end up squandering a chance to take 3-of-4 from the Diamondbacks by suffering their first walk-off loss of the campaign — 3-2.

Before we get to how it ended, let’s look at how it went before the bottom of the ninth.

Justin Wrobleski pitched well yet again against a potent Arizona offense: 6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 84 pitches, 61 strikes. Not bad for the workhorse of the Dodgers’ rotation so far in 2026.

Then, in the Dodgers’ half of the fifth inning, this happened.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen that before. Max Muncy and Ildemaro Vargas collided on a play at first base that resulted in an infield single for Muncy. Muncy had Vargas beat to the bag, but Vargas didn’t peel off and Muncy kinda turned the wrong direction as well. Both players left the game due to injury after the collision.

Here’s the update on Muncy after the game.

About the best we could have hoped for.

With Santiago Espinal pinch-running for Muncy, Ryan Ward dug a low pitch out that resulted in a run-scoring double, thanks to a poor route by Corbin Carroll.

Dalton Rushing followed with a flare to center field that looked like it’d be caught off the bat. Instead, it dropped in for an RBI single to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.

It ended up being pretty fortunate, as Diamondbacks’ starter Ryne Nelson was unscathed otherwise. He held the Dodgers hitless through four innings and the two runs in the fifth are all he allowed. His final line: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 94 pitches, 62 strikes.

Wrobleski got into a little trouble in the sixth. After two outs, he allowed a long single to Nolan Arenado. Ryan Waldschmidt then hit a gapper to left-center field that almost certainly looked like the D’backs’ first run. Instead, Andy Pages made a strong throw to Mookie Betts and Arenado was held at third base. After getting ahead of Pavin Smith — in the game for Vargas — on two successful ABS challenges, Wrobleski got a harmless grounder to second base to end the threat.

Kyle Hurt relieved Wrobleski in the seventh inning, as he’s starting to get some more higher-leverage outings as the Dodgers look for some consistency when it comes to right-handed relievers. After a 1-out single, Hurt locked in and got back-to-back strikeouts (including one against Ketel Marte) to end the frame.

After a 1 1/3-inning outing on Tuesday, Will Klein was called upon in the eighth inning. His second pitch to Corbin Carroll did not go as planned.

It was the first home run he has ever allowed in his MLB career. He struggled with is command, as he issued a 5-pitch walk to Dodger killer Gabriel Moreno after the homer by Carroll. Klein ran the count full to Arenado before striking him out looking on a hittable sweeper. A single by Waldschdmit ended Klein’s night.

Alex Vesia relieved him. Smith was pinch-hit for by Jorge Barrosa, strictly because he’s a right-handed hitter. Smith is batting less than .100, so the move made sense. Barrosa flied out to center field, but Geraldo Perdomo lined a single to center to tie the game. He retired Jose Fernandez to keep the game tied heading into the ninth inning.

It seems the trust tree in the bullpen is going to need a little adjusting after tonight.

A 2-out Will Smith double went for naught in the ninth, as Espinal struck out to end the inning. Shohei Ohtani was available to pinch-hit, but he would have just been intentionally walked if he were summoned.

After recording the save on Tuesday, Tanner Scott got the bottom of the ninth for the Dodgers to try to send the game to extra innings. A strikeout to start the frame was promising. But then, Ketel Marte happened.

It wasn’t even a terrible pitch; you just gotta tip your hat to a great player doing something great.

The loss drops the Dodgers to 40-23 on the season, while the D’backs improve to 33-29. The Dodgers return to LA to host the Angels for a weekend series. Roki Sasaki will get the nod against TBD. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Pacific time.
