Lineup gets dominated again as Dodgers fall into second place – Dodgers Digest

After they got beat yesterday in a well-played game, today was a lot harder to stomach, as Nestor Cortes dominated them and the Padres got their runs after Tyler Glasnow lost command in the middle innings. Either way, it resulted in a 5-1 loss for the Dodgers and a return to second place in the NL West.

======

Tyler Glasnow was on the mound for the Dodgers, and he had some control problems that wasn’t helped by the umpire squeezing him on the edges.

He retired the first six Padres he faced, but in the 3rd he issued a lead-off walk to break that streak, and then gave up a two-out walk, eventually winning a 10-pitch battle with Luis Arraez to get out of the mini-jam.

The 4th was a disaster, as he issued a lead-off walk, gave up a single on a 1-2 pitch, and walked another to load the bases. After he got lucky on a lineout, Ramon Laureano pushed a single through the infield for a pair of runs. Jake Cronenworth followed by hitting a ball deep enough for a sac fly and it was 3-0 before he finally got out of it.

A brutal inning that was the end of his day, as his control was an issue again: 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 3 K, 83 Pitches.

——

That seemed like a huge mountain to climb, as Nestor Cortes started with five perfect innings. Not only was he good and the Dodgers missing pitches, but when they did hit them, nothing fell in.

Miguel Rojas broke up the perfecto in the 6th with a single, but nothing came of it as Shohei Ohtani hit a ball 109 MPH yet again to center and just got under it. A running theme.

——

For the relief core, Ben Casparius started with a clean 5th and Justin Wrobleski continued by getting a clean 6th and 7th.

Meanwhile, the Padres pen started with a dominant 7th, but in the 8th it was Alex Freeland homering again with his second of the year in a pinch-hit appearance to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Back to Wrobleski, who didn’t look quite as sharp in the 9th, beginning with a lead-off walk, giving up a steal, issuing a one-out intentional walk, and giving up a two-out double to right that pushed the deficit to 5-1.

That basically put the game out of reach for sure, as the bats went down quietly in the 9th.

It’s a pretty funny bit for the bottom of the order this series to produce more than the top of the order and for fans to continue solely complaining about the bottom anyway. https://t.co/7hmj2YcDdb

The series will conclude tomorrow a few hours earlier at 10:10 AM HT/1:10 PM PT/4:10 PM ET. This is arguably the marquee matchup of the series, as Yoshinobu Yamamoto faces Nick Pivetta.
