Tanner Scott & Alex Vesia lead late bullpen implosion to prevent sweep – Dodgers Digest

The Dodgers looked like they might get a sweep of the Guardians on the road as they took a lead late into the game, but Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia got unlucky and also sorta imploded late in giving up five late runs and imploding late in a 7-4 loss.

======

Clayton Kershaw started off roughly today, as he gave up a one-out double in the 1st and then seemed to give up another one to Jose Ramirez as well. The hit scored a run to give the Guardians a 1-0 lead, but Andy Pages’ throw cut Ramirez down at second. That proved important, as two walks followed before Kershaw was able to get out of the jam, so it could’ve been a ton worse.

Kershaw then worked around more trouble in the form of a lead-off double in the 2nd, and then also worked around back-to-back one-out singles in the 3rd thanks to a double play and Pages holding the first single (Ramirez again) to a single.

Kershaw then finished strong, getting a clean 4th and then surrendering just a single in the 5th, ending his outing by striking out Ramirez.

Smoke and mirrors, but getting results: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 74 Pitches.

Kershaw left with the lead thanks to a Will Smith RBI double and Andy Pages RBI single in the 4th that made it 2-1.

Freddie Freeman then tacked on a run in the 6th to make it 3-1.

In the 7th, another run scored on an Enrique Hernandez dash to home on a wild pitch. 4-1.

In relief of Kershaw was Lou Trevino, who escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 6th, but gave up an RBI single in the 7th to cut the lead to 4-2.

Tanner Scott entered for the final out in the 7th and then continued in the 8th, where he gave up a seeing-eye single, an infield single that took a weird bounce on Max Muncy, and then issued a walk to load the bases. While he got a strikeout, he then gave up another seeing-eye single to tie things up at 4-4.

Scott got unlucky with contact, but just way too much contact from guys who shouldn’t be making contact against him.

Alex Vesia then gave up a three-run homer to lose it, basically.
