Nike Unveils The Sabrina 4 Signature Shoe

When Nike Basketball introduced Sabrina Ionescu’s first signature shoe, the goal was clear: build a performance model that matched one of the most precise and relentless guards in the game. Three models later, that foundation is firmly established. With the Sabrina 4, the focus shifts.

Internally, the shoe marks the beginning of a new design trilogy, moving away from the handcrafted, hardwood-inspired DNA of the Sabrina 1 through 3 and into something sharper, faster, and more future-facing. It’s a transition that mirrors Ionescu herself: no longer a rising star proving her place, but a defining presence in a league entering a new era.

“This is where we felt like we could flip things a little bit,” says Emma Woodruff, Product Line Manager for the fourth model. “Sabrina has built the foundation—not only as an athlete, but for her footwear line. Now we can lean into something more modern.”

“The goal was to make the underfoot experience feel familiar, but more responsive.”

Emma Woodruff on the purpose of Flyplate

That shift is immediately visible. The Sabrina 4 carries a more angular, sculpted look, with flowing lines that subtly echo forward motion — an intentional nod to a sprinter’s stance out of the blocks. The design language is rooted in speed without sacrificing control, a balance that has defined Ionescu’s game.

Underfoot, that philosophy takes on a new dimension. For the first time in Nike Basketball, the brand introduces the Flyplate, a TPU-based plate system adapted from performance running. While previous Flyplate implementations relied on stiffer carbon fiber constructions, this version is tuned specifically for basketball, enhancing responsiveness without restricting natural movement.

“It’s really about leveling up what already exists,” Woodruff says. “The goal was to make the underfoot experience feel familiar, but more responsive.”

“We talk a lot about right weight versus lightweight…making sure everything we add actually contributes to performance.”

Woodruff on building the perfect package of tech and comfort

That familiarity comes from the return of Cushlon foam and a forefoot Zoom Air unit, two components that have defined the Sabrina line from the get-go. The addition of the Flyplate builds on that system, adding propulsion while reinforcing stability through the midfoot and lateral side. It’s part of a broader concept Nike refers to as “right weight” opposed to “light weight,” but ensuring every element contributes to performance.

Across the rest of the build, the Sabrina 4 refines what has worked while evolving how it’s delivered. The outsole traction pattern remains rooted in the signature “S”-inspired geometry of previous models, now reworked into a more concentric structure. Up top, a layered system combines a glove-like midfoot band with stitched cables for lockdown, all sitting beneath a mono-mesh upper finished with a haptic print that transitions from an “S” to an “I.”

Elsewhere, details are both personal and performance-driven. A compression-molded vamp draws inspiration from the Nike GT Cut 1, while a perforated tongue balances comfort and breathability. Signature elements like the “Breaking Barriers” reverse-Swoosh and dotted “i” on the heel return, reinforcing continuity within the evolution. Even beneath the surface, the messaging is intentional. The outsole’s Flyplate carries the signature phrase split between each foot: “Everyone” on the left, “Everywhere” on the right.

“It was wild seeing grown men in Manila showing up the same way young girls do. That’s the reach she has.”

Emma Woodruff on Sabrina Ionescu’s massive reach in popularity

That phrasing is a reflection of Ionescu’s belief that her journey isn’t limited to one audience. During a recent international tour, Nike designers saw firsthand how Ionescu’s reach transcends traditional boundaries’ young girls in North America and seasoned players in basketball hotbeds like Manila, Philippines show up with equal enthusiasm. That universality is also reflected in the design process. The Sabrina 4 underwent extensive wear-testing across global markets, accounting for different playing surfaces and performance needs. While built to Ionescu’s standards, it’s validated for a broader audience.

With its low-cut build, close-to-the-court feel, and guard-focused performance, the Sabrina signature line has often drawn parallels to Kobe Bryant’s signature models, and it’s a point that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Nike’s design team. Rather than shy away from it, they embrace it.

For Sabrina, that connection is rooted in performance preference as much as legacy because she spent her college years and early WNBA career playing in Kobe models. In building her own signature line, the goal wasn’t to replicate, but to capture that same level of trust by delivering a shoe that performs at the highest level while remaining more accessible to a broader audience.

At the same time, the Sabrina 4 represents a deliberate step forward in establishing its own identity. With a sharper, more modern visual language and the introduction of new performance elements like the Flyplate, the design moves beyond familiar comparisons while maintaining the core attributes that made the line resonate in the first place.

“Being able to have people say that it feels inspired by Kobe…I don’t think is a problem.””

Woodruff on the comparisons to the Zoom Kobe line

The WNBA is experiencing rapid growth that includes plans of new expansion teams by 2030, rising salaries under a new CBA, increased visibility on national television, and a growing roster of signature athletes. Within that context, Ionescu occupies a unique position as one of the athletes who helped build the runway for what the league is becoming.

That said, her evolution is more about influence. Now entering her sixth season (we won’t count that first one because of the injury), that impact shows up in how she approaches the game and continues to refine her craft with the same mindset she’s carried from the beginning.

The Nike Sabrina 4 is launching this July 2026 for $135.
