This game was all Reds, all day. Cincinnati took a 3-0 lead early on and just kept adding on from there. Colorado never could get their offense going, scoring their only run on the day with the help of an error as the Reds topped the Rockies 8-1 on Tuesday evening.

The Highlights

Brandon Williamson made his first start of the spring after getting into two games as a multi-inning reliever. He went to the mound and got his job done and his work in as he tossed 3.0 shutout innings. He allowed just one hit and he struck out three batters.

The offense had his back on the day, too. In the top of the 2nd inning the Reds would rally for three runs. Will Benson led off with a double and scored on a single by Jose Trevino. He then came in to score when P.J. Higgins hit a 425-foot home run to make it 3-0.

The Reds would get back to things in the top of the 4th against former Red Jimmy Herget. Nathaniel Lowe was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Jose Trevino followed up with a single. Both would come in to score when TJ Friedl connected for his first home run of the spring to double the lead for Cincinnati, making it 6-0. Will Benson would get in on the home run derby in the next inning with a solo homer of his own – and his 4th home run of the spring.

Colorado would get a run in the 7th inning with the help of the Reds defense. Lyon Richardson was on his way to working around a 2-out single, but a throwing error allowed Charlie Condon to reach base and a single followed up to bring in a run.

Cincinnati rallied in the top of the 9th with one out, getting a single from Alfredo Duno that was followed by Dominic Pitelli being hit by a pitch. Yerlin Confidan then came through with a 2-out RBI single that made it 8-1.

Anthony Misiewicz needed just nine pitches in the bottom of the 9th to retire the Rockies and end the game.

News and Notes

TJ Friedl went 3-3 with three runs batted in on the day. Will Benson went 2-3 with a double and a home run as he continues to show off plenty of power this spring. Jose Trevino also had two hits on the day.

Pierce Johnson, Hagen Danner, Luis Mey, and Anthony Misierwicz all threw a shutout inning of relief. The Reds pitching staff walked just one batter and had nine strikeouts on the day. Cincinnati’s hitters didn’t walk once and struck out 11 times.

On Wednesday the Reds will be back at home in Goodyear as they will play host to the Milwaukee Brewers. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05pm ET and it’s a radio-only broadcast. Scheduled to pitch in the game: Andrew Abbott, Emilio Pagan, Tony Santillan, Graham Ashcraft, Sam Moll, and Zach Maxwell.
