The Dodgers needed any result to end the Cardinals series and avoid a sweep, and it was Justin Wrobleski once again stepping up to deliver for a struggling offense. Speaking of the bats, they did get just enough across during the game for a lead that the pen was able to barely cling onto in a 4-1 victory.

Old friend Dustin May was on the mound for the Cardinals, and he started well with a 1-2-3 1st frame. But as things tend to go with him, the 2nd was a different story. A lead-off Kyle Tucker double was followed by a walk to Max Muncy, and after a strikeout, it was an Andy Pages double to left to score a run. Then Hyeseong Kim followed with a single to plate another before a double play killed the rally (a troubling trend). 2-0 Dodgers.

After another double play killed a rally in the 3rd, and yet another happened in the 4th, the Dodgers found the plate again in the 5th. A lead-off single from Kim was moved to second and then scored on a two-out Freddie Freeman single to make it 3-0 Dodgers.

May was done after a scoreless 6th, and another old friend in Justin Bruihl entered for the 7th and navigated around a walk and a dramatic Shohei Ohtani HBP.

Almost comically, the 8th saw another double play, this time against Jared Shuster.

That zero stayed on the board because Justin Wrobleski once again was efficient and effective (and lucky).
After he faced the minimum in the 1st thanks to inducing a double play of his own, a pair of singles in the 2nd put him in some trouble. However, Dalton Rushing got him out of it by throwing through on a double steal attempt.

In the 3rd, a two-out error led to a rally after a walk followed, but he navigated around that traffic as well. The same applied to the 4th when a pair of two-out singles led to nothing from the Cardinals. Wrobo rebounded from busy innings with a clean 5th thanks to a nice play from Kim at short.

He finished his outing by giving up another two-out single in the 6th but nothing else.

In a bit of a surprise, Will Klein entered in relief for the 7th, either because Dave Roberts didn’t want to tempt fate or because the pen has been relatively unused due to the losing. Either way, Klein got a seven-pitch 7th inning, then came back out for the 8th. He seemed to be cruising along, but a two-out walk was followed by a single on a 3-2 count with the runner going, and when Andy Pages bobbled the ball in center (somehow not an error, apparently), it allowed him to score to cut the lead to 3-1 Dodgers.

With Schuster still in the game, the Dodgers were able to get insurance in the 9th. Andy Pages reached on an error, stole second, and got to third on a groundout. Then pinch-hitter Alex Call came up and drilled a ball past the drawn-in infield to make it 4-1.

The Dodgers will now travel to Houston for a three-game series against the struggling Astros. It’ll start at 2:10 PM HT/5:10 PM PT/8:10 PM ET with Yoshinobu Yamamoto facing … somebody? Colton Gordon, maybe. The offense needs to get right against this staff.
