Every new revelation surrounding the death of boxer Hannah Rapp makes one heartbreaking conclusion increasingly difficult to escape: the tragedy appears to have been preventable.

Less than three weeks after the 26-year-old prospect was killed while cycling in Texas, new details have raised disturbing questions about how the man accused of causing the fatal crash remained free despite years of previous encounters with law enforcement.

According to an ESPN investigation, Charles Eric Medina had more than 50 contacts with police over the past eight years, multiple arrests, open criminal cases and a court-ordered psychological evaluation before Rapp lost her life. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Rapp died on July 18 after being struck by a vehicle while riding with her boyfriend near College Station.

Police allege Medina initially stopped his vehicle before reversing and hitting Rapp, who later died in hospital. He has since been charged with manslaughter, while prosecutors have also pursued an aggravated assault charge linked to the incident involving Rapp’s boyfriend.

The allegations remain before the courts.

The ESPN investigation found Medina had repeatedly been released despite previous arrests and still had multiple pending criminal cases when the fatal incident occurred. During a recent hearing, a judge described him as “a danger to the public” while refusing to reduce his bond. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Those revelations have intensified calls for “Hannah’s Law,” a proposal seeking stronger powers for judges to deny bail to repeat offenders considered a danger to the community. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

A Preventable Tragedy

Hannah’s death sent shockwaves through the sport, not only because of the tragic circumstances, but because it increasingly appears the crash could have been prevented.

The more that comes out about this story, the more harrowing it becomes as the boxing community and Rapp’s loved ones try to come to terms with the loss of a talented young fighter.

Every fresh revelation makes the same question even harder to answer: how was this allowed to happen?

If Hannah Rapp’s death leaves any legacy, those closest to her hope it will be a change in the law that prevents another family from suffering the same heartbreak.
