Big Money Awaits Janibek Alimkhanuly At Super Middleweight

Janibek Alimkhanuly is leaving middleweight in search of bigger opportunities, but the move to 168 pounds may require more patience than he can afford. At 33 and coming off a one-year suspension following a positive VADA test for meldonium, he’ll be starting over in a crowded division filled with established contenders.

The financial upside is obvious. There were few major paydays left for Janibek at 160. At super middleweight, names like Hamzah Sheeraz, Jaime Munguia and Christian Mbilli offer far bigger opportunities. Reaching those fights may take time. Janibek has no standing at 168, and the leading contenders already have their own title plans and mandatory obligations.

If he wants the quickest route to a title shot, IBF champion Osleys Iglesias may be the most realistic target. It would also be the most dangerous. Iglesias has developed into one of the division’s biggest punchers, making him a risky first major test for a former middleweight returning after a lengthy layoff.

Janibek also enters the division with unanswered questions. His toughest performance as a middleweight came against Denzel Bentley in 2022. Bentley pushed him the full 12 rounds, landed clean shots throughout the fight and forced Janibek to work at a pace that left him looking tired during the second half. Since then, Janibek has beaten Steven Butler, Vincenzo Gualtieri, Andrei Mikhailovich and Anauel Ngamissengue. Those victories preserved his position at middleweight, but they did little to show how he compares against the elite fighters waiting at 168.

His middleweight run also ends without fights against Carlos Adames or Yoenli Hernandez, two of the strongest names remaining in the division. Rather than answering those questions, Janibek has chosen to test himself in a heavier weight class.

The move may lead to the biggest purse of his career, but it also forces him to rebuild his position from the ground up. Coming off a one-year suspension may make it harder to secure the marquee fights he’s chasing. The rewards at 168 are much greater, but so are the obstacles.
