Welterweight Jack Catterall (32-2, 14 KOs) fought well tonight, knocking out Ekow Essuman (22-2, 8 KOs) in round 11 of a competitive fight. Catterall knocked Essuman out of the ring in the 11th round after hurting him with a combination. Referee John Latham then pulled the plug on the fight. The time was at 0:50 of round 11.
Light welterweight Adam Azim (14-0, 11 KOs) dominated American Kurt Scoby (18-2, 16 KOs), knocking him out in the 12th round of a one-sided fight from start to finish. Azim hurt Scoby in the 12th with a left to the head, causing him to take a knee. Referee Howard Foster stopped the fight when he saw the bad shape Scoby, 30, was in when he got back to his feet. It was an okay stoppage. Azim was teeing off on Scoby, and there was way too much time remaining in the round for him to have survived if Foster hadn’t stopped it. Earlier in the fight, Scoby was penalized a point for leading with his head. It was pretty blatant with the way he was coming in headfirst.
Heavyweight Richard Riakporhe (19-1, 15 KOs) massacred Tommy Welch (16-1, 9 KOs), crushing him to bits by a second-round knockout in this car crash-level fight that was scheduled for 10 rounds. The 35-year-old Riakporhe dropped Welch like a bad habit in round two, connecting with a scorching right hand to the top of his head. Welch barely made it to his feet to beat the count. He should have stayed down, as he had nothing to fend off the 6’5″ Riakporhe, and continued to eat shots.
Another right hand put Welch down. He looked like a tub of mess when he got to his feet. It would have taken a miracle for Welch to survive at this point, but none were coming for the 30-year-old. Once again, Riakporhe deposited him on the canvas with a nice right hand. Referee Mark Bates decided he’d seen enough and opted to stop the slaughter. The time was 2:48 of round two.
Junior middleweight Ishmael Davis (15-3, 6 KOs) labored to a 12-round unanimous decision over the game Sam Gilley (18-2-1, 9 KOs) to win the vacant British 154-lb title. Davis was getting hit a lot by Gilley, but he edged the rounds by using his superior size to rough him up. It was a pure blue-collar type of performance by Davis, who looks powerful but doesn’t have power. The victory places Davis’ record at 2-3 in his last five fights. That’s not exactly world championship material. The scores were 115-114, 115-113, and 115-113.
Flyweight Mikie Tallon (11-0, 2 KOs) had too much firepower for Fezan Shahid (4-3-2), blasting him out in the fifth round of the first fight in tonight’s card in prelim action. Tallon threw a short jab followed by a picture-perfect right uppercut that caught Shahid on the jaw, sending him down back-first on the canvas. Referee Mark Bates then waved it off. The time of the stoppage was at 3:06 of the fifth.
