George Rose believes Tim Tszyu’s move to middleweight gives him a real opportunity to hand Errol Spence Jr. another defeat when they meet this weekend in Sydney.

Rose has backed Tszyu throughout his career, but he admitted this represents the toughest opponent the Australian star has faced. Even so, he feels the jump to 160 pounds tilts the fight in Tszyu’s direction.

During an interview this week, Rose explained why he likes Tszyu’s chances.

“I believe in Tim, and I always have. I know this is the toughest fight, the toughest opponent that he’s ever faced. Errol Spence Jr. is a future Hall of Famer. He’s an absolute beast.

“But Tim Tszyu, I think this is going to suit him. Fighting at 160, I think it’s actually going to suit him a lot more than it’ll suit Errol.

“Don’t get me wrong, he’s going to have to work for it. He is going to have to work for it and really fight a very smart fight to get the win, but I believe that Tim is going to beat Errol Spence on Sunday,” said Rose to Jai McAllister Boxing.

Rose also praised Spence’s accomplishments despite the former unified welterweight champion’s loss to Terence Crawford in 2023. He still considers Spence one of boxing’s elite fighters and believes defeating him would rank among the biggest victories of Tszyu’s career.

Rose stressed that Tszyu cannot rely on size alone. He believes the Australian must produce the finest performance of his career to overcome an opponent with Spence’s pedigree.

“For Tim Tszyu to beat him, fighting at 160 benefits him, but Tim Tszyu will have to be the best version that we’ve ever seen of Tim. I think that’s what we do have.

“I think that he’s very strong right now. I think that he’s very confident, and the strength and confidence, I think, are two big things that are going to help him get this win,” said Rose.

A win would give Tszyu the signature name on his resume and strengthen his standing at junior middleweight. Rose believes the move to 160 suits Tszyu, but he also knows he’ll have to prove it once the opening bell rings.
