Gervonta Davis’ Coach Kenny Ellis Claims Shakur Stevenson ‘Missed The Boat,’ Accuses Him Of Attempting To ‘Age Out’ Tank

Gervonta Davis’ coach, Kenny Ellis, says Shakur Stevenson “missed the boat” by not taking the fight with Tank when it was offered to him. They’ve now “moved on” to other things. Kenny states that he believes Shakur was trying to “age him out,” and his ploy isn’t going to work.

Aging Out Claims

Ellis doesn’t say when Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) passed up on the opportunity to fight him, but he says he had his chance and missed out. The Newark, New Jersey native tried to age him out, but it didn’t work. Now, he’s going to have to live with it.

If Shakur can’t get the Tank Davis fight, his options at 135 are slim. His career as a world title holder could come to an end abruptly by these fighters:

– Andy Cruz– Raymond Muratalla– Abdullah Mason– William Zepeda– Jadier Herrera

“I think he might age him out, but he ain’t aging anytime soon,” said coach Kenny Ennis to MillCity Boxing about his belief that Shakur Stevenson might try and “age out” Gervonta Davis. “I don’t care for it because it could have been happen. I don’t really care for it.’

It’s hard to believe Shakur would try and age out Tank Davis. He’s been calling out Davis left and right since he moved up to the lightweight division in 2023. He’s been almost begging for the Tank fight. Why would he try and age him out? That doesn’t sound right.

“People want you to do when they want to do it. No, it don’t work like that. We’re the face of boxing. You missed the you; you missed the boat. He missed the boat. They don’t control us. They don’t tell us when to move. They don’t tell Tank when to move,” said Ellis.

Zepeda Deal Not There

WBC lightweight champion Shakur is hoping to set up a fight with William Zepeda, but it’s not looking good right now after the deal he thought he had with Turki is no longer there. Last Saturday, Stevenson said this on X about his plans to pursue a fight against Zepeda:

“The fight is ordered by the WBC. I’m still Champion and aren’t pulling out of anything. If we can’t reach a deal [with Golden Boy], then purse bids it is. See you soon.”

Stevenson complained on X that Turki was no longer offering him the money he thought he would get for a fight against WBC interim lightweight champion Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs). He was now offered less than he got for his last fight against Josh Padley.

Missed Opportunity?

“It’s a possibility. You never know,” said Kenny when asked if Shakur chose not to take the Tank fight because of his hands. Like Tank say. He might retire. We have to wait and see what he do. Whatever he do, I’ll respect it. If he keep going, he’s got my support.

“A lot of these guys had the opportunity, and they didn’t take it. Keep on moving. Life goes on,” said Ellis.
