Nobody Wants to Fight Moses Itauma — the Heavyweight with Tyson-Like Power

Moses Itauma’s destructive knockout of Jermaine Franklin has intensified belief that the British-Slovak heavyweight could soon dominate the division after another emphatic display in Manchester.

The unbeaten southpaw stopped Franklin with a crushing fifth-round uppercut on the Magnificent 7 card at the Co-op Live Arena, continuing one of the most explosive rises in heavyweight boxing.

Itauma controlled the contest from the opening bell, forcing Franklin onto the back foot and into survival mode for much of the fight.

His speed and power were evident immediately and remained a constant threat until the fifth-round finish.

Franklin had previously gone the distance with elite heavyweights including Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte, making the brutal nature of Itauma’s finish even more significant.

Heavyweight Future

Itauma’s rise is beginning to attract comparisons with the early career surge of Mike Tyson.

The similarities are not based on hype alone. Like Tyson during his devastating run between 1986 and 1990, Itauma has developed a reputation for overwhelming opponents with brute force and finishing instinct.

The knockout of Franklin only reinforced that image.

When the 21-year-old lands cleanly, opponents rarely recover.

Even during Anthony Joshua’s emergence as Britain’s next heavyweight star, few opponents were dismantled with the same ruthless efficiency.

The heavyweight rankings are already reflecting Itauma’s momentum.

One Step Closer to the Title

Following the victory over Franklin, the World Boxing Organization confirmed the undefeated contender now sits at the top of its ratings.

WBO President Gustavo Olivieri stated:

“In light of Moses Itauma’s current position as the #1 WBO world-rated contender, and having defeated world-rated contender Jermaine Franklin by knockout in defense of his WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Championship, he has further affirmed his standing within the division as a rising star.

Accordingly, I will formally recommend to the Championship Committee that Mr. Itauma be designated as the Mandatory Challenger in the WBO Heavyweight Division.”

That position could soon create a complicated situation.

Fabio Wardley faces Daniel Dubois later this year, with the winner likely to move into the WBO title picture. Should Wardley emerge victorious, the two fighters could find themselves on the same mandatory path despite training in the same camp.

For now, however, the bigger story surrounds the reaction Itauma’s rise is generating across the heavyweight landscape.

Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury, and Anthony Joshua have all spoken about the young contender when asked about the next generation of heavyweights.

Yet despite the attention from the sport’s biggest names, no established heavyweight has publicly expressed a desire to face him.

After another devastating knockout in Manchester, that reality may soon become unavoidable.
