Ortiz Shuts Down Davis’ Face-Off Routine At Weigh-In

Jamaine Ortiz did not play along at the weigh in on Friday, and that refusal said more than the brief shove that followed.

When Keyshawn Davis reached forward during their face off and placed his hand near Ortiz’s face, Ortiz immediately slapped it away. Security stepped in, and the moment ended there. It was short, clean, and decisive. Ortiz was not interested in gestures or posturing, and he made that clear without escalating the situation.

Davis dismissed the exchange afterward, calling it “acting” and suggesting he was already inside Ortiz’s head. That response fit a familiar pattern. Davis often treats face offs as performance, leaning on small physical cues to control space and attention. This time, it didn’t land. Ortiz shut it down on contact.

The visual contrast only sharpened that point. Davis appeared at the weigh in wearing a ski mask that covered his head and face, leaving only his eyes visible. It was an odd choice, especially against an opponent who showed no interest in theatrics. Rather than setting a tone, it created distance, and not the intimidating kind.

Physically, this was also a different picture for Davis. At lightweight, he usually stood taller and broader than the men across from him. Here, he stood next to someone his own size, and visibly thicker through the shoulders and chest. Ortiz did not look overmatched. He looked comfortable.

Jaron Ennis, who shared amateur rounds with Ortiz, described the fight as a “50 50” matchup earlier in the day. That assessment matched what played out on the scale. Nothing about the scene suggested imbalance or hierarchy.

Ortiz leaned into that afterward. He called the fight personal and promised to settle it in the ring. Davis waved it off and returned to familiar language, insisting the moment meant nothing and that answers would come on fight night.

They will be on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. But the weigh in already offered one clear signal. Ortiz drew a line early, and Davis did not move it.
