The Valdez-Medina event will be shown live on ESPN Deportes, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Career on the Brink

The former two-division world champion Valdez (32-3, 24 KOs) is trying to save his career after losing two out of his last three fights since 2022. This fight is a must-win situation for the 34-year-old Valdez. If he’s beaten by Medina (16-3, 9 KOs), it’s going to be hard to come back from it. If Oscar loses, he can always drop down in weight to featherweight and try to reinvent himself there.

The fight is a rebuild for Valdez after his sixth-round knockout loss to WBO super featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete in their rematch on December 7, 2024. In hindsight, Valdez probably should have never taken the fight with Navarrete after losing to him by a wide 12-round unanimous decision in their first fight on August 12, 2023.

Weigh-in: Valdez and Medina

• Oscar Valdez 127.9 vs. Ricky Medina 127.9

• Israel Ramirez 121.5 vs. Jose Amaro 123

• Angel Patron 123 vs. Carlos Vargas 123

• Erick Fernando Campos 139.3 vs. Omar Garcia 136.7

• Luis Corona Parra 133.8 vs. Yohan Orduño 130.1

Medina has lost to Raymond Ford, Geo Lopez, and George Acosta in the last three years. He went the distance in a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Ford on June 25, 2022. He didn’t win a round, but he still survived the entire fight without getting stopped by Raymond. That was impressive.

Valdez’s Quest for a Title

“In boxing, I have had my ups and downs. The main goal for me right now is to become a world champion again,” said Oscar Valdez. “I want to return to Nogales as a world champion, and I want to be your champion. I have to get through this fight.

“I’m taking this fight very seriously. I respect Ricky Medina a lot. I have seen him fight. He is strong and young, and he has the same dream that I have. All boxers want to become world champions, and that’s why we are all here. I’m focused on doing what I have to do, which is to win.

“I need to make clear in this fight who will go on to fight for a world title. I want to be a world champion again.”
