Roy Jones Jr. has urged Canelo Alvarez to avoid facing a certain fighter at all costs.
Canelo is almost 70 fights into an exceptional professional career, which began almost two decades ago when he was just 15-years-old.
The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico became the first fighter in boxing history to capture the undisputed super middleweight championship when he defeated Caleb Plant back in 2021, where he made a number of successful defences of his crown against Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia to name a few.
Despite his outstanding success, Canelo has been urged by retired four-weight world champion Roy Jones Jr. to avoid fighting one world champion at all costs.
In an interview with Boxing Social, Jones believes the Mexican superstar should do all he can to avoid facing reigning unified light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, who became the second fighter to defeat Canelo back in 2022.
“No [he shouldn’t rematch Bivol at 175], if its at 168 yeah, he looks good at 168 so if you wanna do it you gotta do it at 168 but not at 175.”
Bivol achieved a career long dream of becoming the undisputed light heavyweight champion when he defeated Artur Beterbiev in their rematch on February 22, avenging the defeat he suffered in their first encounter back in October.
The 34-year-old from Russia recently vacated his WBC world title in favour of facing mandatory challenger David Benavidez, who had held the WBC ‘Interim’ world title since beating Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his division debut last year.
