Turki’s Ring Ambassador Pick Ignores Bruce Carrington’s Critics

Turkish Alalshikh had named featherweight contender Bruce Carrington as one of the brand ambassadors for The Ring.

It’s a questionable move because many fans view Carrington as a classic example of a hype job who has fought against strictly weak opposition to build his 15-0 record. As long as Carrington doesn’t fight anybody good, he’ll be great in the ambassador role.

However, if he’s matched against any of the killers at 126, he will fall apart. I wouldn’t think for a second of using Carrington as a brand ambassador unless I was prepared to match him against tomato cans for as long as he’s in that role. It would be a disaster if Carrington were to fight someone with talent like Rafael Espinoza.

The Segawa Fight

Moreover, many people thought Carrington lost his fight with Sulaiman Segawa last September. He won a 10-round split decision but appeared to lose by a wide margin. I had it 9-1 in Segawa’s favor. He dominated Carrington, taking him to school.

Since that fight, Carrington has been pulled backward by Top Rank, matched against a couple of mediocre fighters, and he’s looked like 24k gold. He’s a destroyer when matched carefully.

He’ll shine against lower-level fighters, but it would be a terrible idea for Turki to throw Carrington in with a killer at featherweight. He’ll end up like heavyweight Jared Anderson when he was blown out in five rounds by Martin Bakole when he fought in a Riyadh Season event last August.

The perception is that Top Rank is protecting him in their matchmaking to prevent him from being repeatedly beaten and exposed. In other words, he’s receiving the Edgar Berlanga and Keyshawn Davis treatment.

As a brand ambassador for The Ring, Carrington is perfect for the job in terms of his ability to talk. He’d do a good job in that function if they want him to give lectures. But if he challenges one of the featherweight champions like Rafael Espinoza, Stephen Fulton, or Nick Ball, he’ll likely lose badly. He wants Fulton, who isn’t a big puncher.

Carrington is taking a lot of criticism for not calling out WBO champion Espinoza because he’s ranked #1 for his belt. It makes him look afraid, which is understandable. Espinoza would expose Carrington worse than Segawa did.

I’m proud to welcome Bruce Carrington as our brand ambassador. He represents everything we admire in the sport—talent, focus, and class. pic.twitter.com/VM4s3pncw5
