Algeria to stick with coach Vladimir Petkovic despite AFCON exit

Algeria have opted to stick with coach Vladimir Petkovic despite their quarter-final exit at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Fennec Foxes succumbed 2-0 to Nigeria on Saturday, Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams getting the goals in Marrakech, to end Algeria’s journey at the last-eight stage.

It was a difficult draw for Petkovic’s side who had impressed earlier in the tournament as one of just two teams – Nigeria being the other – to come through the group stage with a 100% record from their three games. They then beat DR Congo 1-0 in the round of 16.

There had been suggestions Petkovic could be sacked but the Algerian Football Federation today released a statement throwing their backing behind the former Switzerland boss.

It read: “The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) will continue its efforts with consistency and determination, mobilising all necessary human, technical, and organisational resources so that the national team remains among the best and a source of pride, joy, and honour for Algerians.

“The Algerian Football Federation extends its sincere thanks to all supporters and to the media who have accompanied the national team throughout this continental campaign. It also expresses its gratitude to the public authorities for their support and for providing the means necessary for the national team’s success.

“In conclusion, the Algerian Football Federation renews its full confidence in the squad, the coaching staff, and all those working for the development of national football.”

Petkovic to continue as Algeria boss ahead of the World Cup

Petkovic, who has led Algeria to a place at this summer’s World Cup finals, took charge in February 2024 and has won 26 of his 37 games.

The FAF added: “While taking note of the sporting result, the Algerian Football Federation calls on all Algerian supporters to remain in solidarity and united around our National Team, engaged in a phase of reconstruction and part of a process of work and progression.

“A major deadline looms in less than five months with the FIFA World Cup, which requires the mobilisation, serenity and support of all.

“The players and the technical staff showed commitment, seriousness and determination throughout the competition. As such, they deserve the recognition and encouragement of the entire national football family.”

Algeria unhappy with performance of officials in Nigeria defeat

It was not all positive from Algeria though with an official complaint lodged in response to what they perceive to be a poor refereeing display in the game with Nigeria – with particular grievance over a first-half handball incident that went unpunished.

The statement read: “The Algerian Football Federation cannot ignore the refereeing performance observed during the last match, which raised many questions. Some decisions have undermined the credibility of African officiating and do not contribute in any way to the enhancement of continental football on the international stage.

“To this end, the FAF has officially contacted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA and filed a formal complaint, accompanied by a request for the opening of an investigation, so that full light is shed on the facts identified and that appropriate measures are taken in accordance with the regulations in force.”
