Alisson reacts to record-breaking performance in victory over PSG

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has admitted his performance in the Reds’ 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday was the best he has ever produced.

The Reds were on the receiving end of 70% possession and 27 shots as the Ligue 1 champions produced a truly dominant display, but Alisson saved the day with a whopping nine shots as he repeatedly repelled Luis Enrique’s side. Those heroics surpassed the Brazilian’s own record of most saves in a Champions League match for Liverpool.

That set up a dramatic smash-and-grab from late substitute Harvey Elliott, who converted Liverpool’s only shot on target to snatch a 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

“It was probably the performance of my life,” Alisson reflected to TNT Sports. “The manager was telling us how hard it would be to play against PSG, how good they are with the ball and that we would have to be ready to suffer. We knew what was coming. We worked hard. We gave away so many chances, sometimes one v one but the biggest part of the chase is having someone make the player with the chance think a bit more.

“All the efforts the team put in makes my job easier. Then at the end Harvey coming in and scoring the goal, it is a great story for us. A great night.”

Manager Arne Slot gleefully heaped praise on Alisson after the final whistle as he admitted the Brazilian had helped them steal a victory.

“[Alisson] showed he is the best in the world today,” Slot said. “To go away with a win here was probably a bit more than we deserved.

“We were not under par, it was the pure quality of Paris Saint-Germain, the way they’ve played all season. All the underlying stats tell you they are the best team this season.”
