Angel City FC announced that an investigation is underway after a “fireworks malfunction” occurred during a post-match celebration following the July 3 match against the Orlando Pride. No serious injuries were reported, but paramedics were called in after some fireworks wound up in the stands.
In a statement, Angel City shared: “A fireworks malfunction occurred during a post-match celebration on Friday, July 3, at Angel City FC’s match against the Orlando Pride at BMO Stadium. We understand this was a frightening moment for many in attendance, and we are grateful that no severe injuries were reported. We are awaiting the results of an investigation by the pyrotechnics vendor that operated the display. We regret that this incident occurred, as the safety and well-being of our fans, players and staff remain our top priority.”
Video on social media (taken by @ThisIsJadeRyan) captured fireworks blasting into the crowd at BMO Field, which is a open-roof stadium. The post-match fireworks were in honor of the Fourth of July, Independence Day, holiday.
Furthermore, video also showed smoke filling BMO Field. A fan in attendance shared the video on X (Twitter), saying that a “teen” was hit and had to be “rushed away” by paramedics. The fan also shared that it was “so smokey it was really hard to see what was happening” and that paramedics and security began to clear the stands.
