Blackburn Rovers are on the search for a new head coach as Michael O’Neill decides NOT to remain in charge after guiding them to safety.
The 56 year old will instead stay on as Northern Ireland manager after rejecting permanent offer from the EFL Championship outfit.
In his 15 games in charge of Blackburn, he won 5, drew 5 and lost 5, and finished 20th with 52 points from 46 games played, 5 points above the drop zone.

CLUB STATEMENT:
Blackburn Rovers can confirm that Michael O’Neill will not be extending his current agreement to become the club’s permanent Head Coach beyond the conclusion of his existing period with the club.
Following discussions with the club, Michael has decided to continue his long-term commitment to his role as Northern Ireland Head Coach, with a focus on leading the national team towards qualification for the UEFA European Championships in 2028.
Michael joined Blackburn Rovers during an important period of the season and brought significant experience, professionalism and leadership to the football club throughout his time at Ewood Park.
During his spell with the club, he oversaw Championship safety across a demanding 15-game period, securing 20 points from five wins, five draws and five defeats.
Speaking on the decision, Michael O’Neill said: “Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate supporters. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff and everyone around the club.
“After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead. I would like to thank the Owners, Board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club.”
Blackburn Rovers’ Chief Operating Officer, Suhail Shaikh, said: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Michael for his contribution, professionalism and commitment during his time with the club.
“Michael’s experience and leadership have been highly valued by everyone at Blackburn Rovers. Whilst we are naturally disappointed that he will not be continuing on a permanent basis, we fully respect his decision to focus on his long-term ambitions with Northern Ireland.
“On behalf of the Owners, Board, staff and supporters, we wish Michael every success for the future.”
Blackburn Rovers will now begin the process of identifying and appointing a new permanent Head Coach, with further updates to be communicated in due course.
Here’s how fans reacted with Blackburn on the search for a new head coach as Michael O’Neill decides NOT to remain in charge…
@ahilton311: Clearly wanted to stay but hasn’t had the assurances he wanted / needed – another long summer of signing absolute no hopers with a nodding dog in the dug out 🤮
@Phil_Comley: Oh dear. All optimism has once again been sucked away
@CyberpunkBTC85: Good luck with those season ticket sales. Also funny how you’ve turned off the response. Joke of a club
@louise_d20: Disappointed? Very. Surprised? Can’t say as I am tbh, with the way things are at the club. God only knows who’s next though the revolving door 🙄
@scottyconnor20: Ah Micheal ! Hurts a lot this one from thinking could be a solid champ side next season to what comes next 😫.
@hollyjayne1875: turned them comments off pretty rapid 🤣
@LiamOzzy89: Just when there was hope of a move in the right direction ….. buckle in for another rollercoaster of a season #rovers
@AdamSc077: Weeks ruined, class what he’s done for us when came in, optimism gone at the min be interested to see who comes in and who they get in transfer wise
@RoverSantaBluez: Comments off. Just as things were looking up with the club the one way conversation begins again. No decent manager would touch Rudy and Pasha with a bargepole, obviously assurances couldn’t be promised. Highly likley were down by April. #rovers
@Paul17771942960: To translate, Michael has come to the conclusion that the board has no ambition other than to cut costs wherever they feel fit and not provide him with appropriate funds and coaching staff along with the continuation of using chatGPT to scout players. #venkysout #blackburn
@ScoutingRovers: 😐 not really the news many wanted or were hoping for. Saying that, I think it’s fair to say MO’N saved the club from relegation and for that we have to say a huge thank you and wish him all the very best for the future. #rovers ⚽️⚪️🔵🌹
@langhorovers: Pasha out Rudy out Owens out Venkys out
@LorryPoet: Fancy not wanting to work with Gestede and Pasha!
@jongardner1979: Why would we ever expect any good news. What a joke.
@glen9mullan: Will go down as one of the most important figures in the last 150 years. Saved the club from certain relegation and wish him all the best. I was very supportive of the dual role, and he did what he was brought into do. Disappointed he dont want to stay on, but I can hardly blame him tbh. Noises seemed positive last week, so perhaps we cant give him the guarantees that a manager needs in terms of recruitment, budgets, aspirations?Good Luck MON and thank you for saving our season
@Sam_Barrett92: To be fair it has been going far too quiet. Something had to hit the fan. Back to shit show it is.
@DannyShah98: Fucking fuck you fucking all
@_jonnooo: Ruined the week and its only Tuesday
@brfc_brad98: Fuck off
@Johnshackleton2: and the circus continues
@WLindsay23: Fuck sake
